In case you are celebrating Christmas later this year... or want to celebrate it all over again... there are good deals on trees at Saifee Hardware on First Avenue and Seventh Street... where these are free...
I've seen several Christmas tree vendors who have abandoned all their leftover trees around town. Apparently people got tired of being price gouged in a year of high inflation. It was obvious right before Christmas that the trees weren't selling as well as past years. I would grab one but I had already picked up a nice 7 footer for free because you don't have to pay for a tree anymore if you scout around the week before.
Astoria Queens. December 24th 2PM Christmas. Tree Vendor spent over 4 hours destroying at least 50 Christmas Tree they weren't able to sell. They were using chain saws and bagging unsold Christmas trees into big black garbage bags. At least 60 large bags of chopped up unsold Christmas trees waiting for garbage pick-up.
@Giovanni, over the past few weeks the news has been reporting that tree sales have been very good this year. Could it be in fact that the wholesalers make the street veneers buy big quantities in order to get favorable pricing?
I heard from a friend that Christmas tree unit sales overall were down but profits were up. The smart tree sellers brought more small and skinny trees which they sold out of, and thus is where they made big profits. The taller more expensive trees also sold well to the upscale buyers. It was the mid-sized trees that didn’t sell as well, which is why you see so many of them abandoned in the stalls this year.
