A message from the Lower East Side about underage drinking

You may have been read about the 7th Precinct’s crackdown on Lower East Side bars and clubs to curb underage drinking, late night noise and overcrowding. (The Lo-Down has covered the topic extensively.)

EV Grieve contributor samo notes this signage on Houston at Ludlow Street....

Now THERE'S a deterrent - I'm quaking in my boots, and have just torn up my fake ID. Thanks, God-sign, for putting me back on the straight and narrow!

At least it's a clear message. Because living here I get the distinct impression that it's anything goes. (Except for biking through red lights.) The bridge and tunnelers are given carte blanche to carry on with impunity all over our streets and neighborhoods. Don't know about you lot but I don't appreciate that. At least this sign might give pause to any would-be underage drinkers. You people will poo poo it to no end, but let's face it, we badly need some order around here.

I don't believe underage drinking is a problem here. Most underage folks I know don't have the dough to patronize these establishments. I think there's some pressure on the police to make it look like something's being done about the bar scene here after curmudgeonly types (of which we have plenty) complain about it. It appears the best the police could come up with was sting operations where they send in underage plants on busy nights to see if they can manage to get served. A couple do and suddenly we have an underage drinking problem. A problem created by law enforcement as a reason to crack down on bars they don't like.

I live here, and think it's nice the sidewalks aren't rolled up after 8PM. If things get a little hectic on the weekend so be it. This is downtown, after all.

Your distinct impression is absolutely correct. I have had COPS say to me - what do you expect considering you live here. Now the last time I checked I paid NYC taxes - unlike many of the policeman who are here to rape, umm, serve the community.

I don't get a discount on may taxes, so I would prefer no discount on my public services (that goes for the Sanitation Dept too!)
