Water in Tompkins Square Park 'most likely safe' to drink

EV Grieve correspondent Bobby Williams noted this on the Temperance Fountain in Tompkins Square Park...

love the ambiguity of "most likely." classic.

I was thinking that the sticker is a prank.

what is hydraulic fracturing? does this have anything to do with what's going on in the catskills? in case you haven't heard, natural gas drillers are most likely going to destroy all of NYC's clean water supply, it is an enormous threat getting rapidly pushed through by corrupt politicians and rich energy companies, trying to get richer at the expense of NY'ers. this is getting absolutely zero media coverage.

My guess is this is an anti-fracking sticker. And a pretty good one.

glamma is right on: the threat of fracking (hydraulic fracturing) up in the Catskills (Marcellus Shale) is alarming, with little media coverage. At least NYC DEP is on it, but then there's today's shameful anti-green, pro-fracking Post editorial, which makes no mention of possible NYC water contamination.

"If you have any concerns about contamination due to hydraulic fracturing, expose water to flame."

My mind just blowed up. It blowed up real good!

Fracturing is a process in which fluid is pumped into the ground to force natural gas deposits closer to the surface. The health concern is that there have been widely reported instances where the gas deposits as well as the fracturing fluids are forced into the water supply. The labels are allegedly printed by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection.

I saw this same exact sticker in the NYU coles gym locker room, at the water fountain. I'm hoping its actually DEP, but more likely a great protest sticker.

These are also all over the NYU water fountains. Something is afoot...

the fracking chemicals in the water can ignite and you have fire instead of water.
it is amazing and horrifying.
the folks that sell their rights receive large (for the area) financial rewards but then they can't drink their water, cook or take a bath.
the fracking companies have supplied water to those with contaminated wells, and at the same time they claim that fracking is safe.
give me a break!
there are amazing videos on you tube.

Thats a great protest-prank, so well done though, that unfortunately people may not actually get the joke.

this is all too fracking much.

The movie Gasland is a very well-made documentary on fracking. It actually has the gas companies skittish enough that that they have Gasland 'rebuttals' circulating the web. Must-see.

This post fracks me up!

@ blue glass
Fracking sucks, and the chemicals used in the process are highly toxic. They are not flammable and certainly not what causes ignitable water to flow from faucets . Natural gas is flammable. Please read-up on the subject.

I looked for it today but it was gone from the column at the fountain in Tompkins.
