I've got a plot at the 6th and B garden, and squirrels and feral cats are our biggest nuisances, the former love to munch on flower bulbs while the latter shit in the vegetable patches. Rats prefer burgers and greasy fries -- just like humans.
Rats are tunneling creatures that need to chew everything in sight, and our garden has been plagued by rats since time immemorial. If they don't chew, their teeth will grow up into their brains (or something like that).
We've tried everything to get rid of them with as little poison as possible, but mostly we only control them a little. All the surrounding buildings have rats, and the exterminator told us that unless those buildings get a better grip on their rat problems, we will never be rid of them.
I am always tripping over rats at night when I walk by the garden on my street. It is overgrown and the critters have a lot of places to hide and jump out from.
If you have rodents getting into your trash, you should check out this company called Mint-X. they make garbage bags that somehow repel rats, I dont know if this will help but you can suggest your building manager to try them
