Business as usual? Part of the New York is always changing mantra...? Or is the rate of transformation accelerating of late...?

gasp. it's always shocking when you put it all together that way.
it's definitely changing at a more rapid clip of late.
Yeah, even if they're cutting bonuses on Wall Street (which they keep saying and it never seems to happen), the tide of affluence is gonna swamp what remains of the funky Village. Maybe Ray's will survive, but not much else. The good news is that in twenty or thirty years, Wall Street will have moved to China and New York will probably be a very different kind of city. Or a dirty Paris. We'll see, or someone will.
Anon 9:50- That's a fascinating idea. With the world shrinking, the need for cities is changing. It's no longer the industrial hub. Many immigrants bypass NYC and head straight out and beyond where rents are affordable. Will cities of the future exist because that is the most sustainable form of living for an overpopulated planet? Or will it be a playground for the few? Where is NYC headed?
Wow, sad to see all these places gone. At least there's a boom in business for places that make "closed" signs.
I was never a Yummy House fan. Sad to see Polonia go though.
Given your streak, perhaps you should start hanging out in the Subways, Seven Elevens and other Anywhere USA chain stores in the hood. Maybe then those will be gone by next Spring.

Ha. I'll be like a Cooler. Bring me in to ruin the hand...
Ugh, seeing these places in this way...so depressing.
I think the plan is to prop up the urban areas related to finance and government, but other areas will be left to decay. The conspiracy nets keep talking about UN Agenda 21 which I understand to be the elite's blueprint.
Great (?!) to see it put this clearly. Expand another six months or so and you could add:
Kim's Video on St Marks
Love Saves the Day
Rubens Empanada
And more I know I'm forgetting.
I think the "Holiday Lounge" is going to be re-opened by the building owner and run by the woman of La Palapa next door. Local people!
I still miss Yummy House. It was my go-to place for Chinese food. And don't even get me started on Holiday and all of the other places we've lost.
@ nygrump: Good to see that we still have room for the Loonies. To claim that Agenda 21 is "the elite's blueprint" is regurgiating Republican dumbspeak. (The RNC adopted a resolution earlier this year claiming that Agenda 21 "is a comprehensive plan of extreme environmentalism, social engineering, and global political control") It's really about sustainable development, should you ever care to actually read it.
take it to the polls.....bloomberg and his cronies only care about $$$$$$$$$
