With the threat of a super-size 7-Eleven at the south corner at 500 E 11, the loss of our community's wonderful flea market and its impending replacement with a huge luxury residential complex along Avenue A, residents on 11th Street have organized to let their voice be heard. If we can't stop these developments, we can still make a difference to prevent the worst. Join us!!

Wednesday, November 14, 7 pm
@ Father's Heart Ministries
545 E 11th St

Can only 11th Street residents attend? What if I live right around the corner from 11th and will be affected by all this too?
I think you would be welcome to attend!
There is a lot going on on 11th Street. It will be interesting to hear what the residents have to say about the residence for the formerly homeless and mentally challenged East Village residents going up in that empty lot on 11th between A and B. People are so divided about it.
I'll be there!
Way to go east 11th street, we got your back!!
Luxury building and 7-11 have both been in the works for quite a while. Unfortunately this meeting is too little too late to stop what's going on along that stretch of 11th & A. Neighborhood has gone to shit and this corner is going to be an atrocity.
Another matter on my agenda is the unceremonious black paint job applied to the former fire house between B & C. Not sure if we'll find time for that though...
Who is putting the money into all of these 7elevens? I don't get it. The new ones seem fairly empty as well.
7 Eleven is coming & luxury housing will be built. Not much that can be done other than don't patronize 7 Eleven,
The City and the neighborhood need a tax-paying entity to occupy this space, not another exempt religious intitution with vendors selling (mostly) junk for cash. Any feedback from the actual vendors on the move to Immaculate Conception and how it's impacted their sales? As for 7-11, if enough people don't shop there, it will close - happens all the time to chains in this neighborhood.
I resent that junk comment. I bought some of my most prized vinyl records here, several awesome vintage jackets and t-shirts, and lots of old americana goodies I used as one-of-a-kind gifts for people. I loved that flea market!
As for this big luxury housing complex, can someone point me to a legit source of that? A deed? A blueprint? A developer rendering?
7-11 is a franchise, not a chain, like Subway, which means they are owned and operated by a variety of types from individual small mom and pop owners to mega owners who invest in tons of franchise operations.
According to the article in New York Magazine a while back, they have big expansion goals in NY including giving incentives to bodega owners to convert their current bodega into a 7-11 where presumably they would make more profit by gaining access to technology that smartly manages inventory (less waste and spoilage), best prices on product and the Slurpie marketing machine.
Landlords like Shaoul who own this 11th Street building LOVE the franchises because the corporation backs the lease so even if the business fails, they get the rent no matter what. Remember it was Shaoul that bumped the Bean for a Starbucks.
And remember too that it was the Bean that is in cohoots with Icon Realty. You know and love Icon, they destroyed those wonderful townhouses on East 4th street, are running an illegal Hotel Toshi on the landmarked East 10th street block across from TSP and are running an illegal hotel right above the Bean. Don't feel bad for the Bean, they new who they were renting from and that they would benefit from the customers staying in the illegal hotel run by Icon upstairs.
Yeah but did The Bean really have to then rent a space with Icon Realty, give me a break! They are serving students and tourists. Fat chance in hell any one can get a seat in there. I don't see any locals in there. They are no angels sorry.
anon 8:59 - Subway is a franchise, not a chain. It's no different from 7-11.
i would like to attend the meeting but i will be working... hoping minutes or a summary of the discussion will be posted somewhere? yes? no?
@ Hillary
We'll have a summary tomorrow...
And I'm open to anyone who wants to share their thoughts on the meeting ....
Oh my God, THAT's what they're building on my corner?! A friggin' 7/11?! That is just gross. I'll try to attend tonight, since the meeting is right across the street from my apartment and all...
