Fed-up residents launch 'Solas Gone Wild'

Residents of East 9th Street have taken to Vimeo hoping to get the nightclub Solas to do something about the chaotic behavior routinely taking place outside of the establishment. The new “Solas Gone Wild” channel features three videos shot Sunday morning at 1:15AM of a Solas patron fighting in front of the club and storming up and down the block. At one point the police arrive, which does little to calm the situation.

Solas Fight - East Village, NYC Pt 3 from Solas Gone Wild on Vimeo.

“This kind of stuff happens every weekend and we're sick of it,” said one of the channel's creators. “It's guys fighting each other, people stumbling drunk into traffic. It's not noise from people having a good time, it's alcohol-induced violence and it needs to stop.”

Calls to 311 and to the nightclub itself have been made but so far the calls have done little to curb the late-night antics, the creators claim. — written by EVG contributor Atomic

Brilliant idea. I can think of a few bars we should throw a streaming video klieg light sitch at.

I don't live over in that part of the EV, but I wish the residents the best with a speedy outcome. As far as the clueless patrons, please. Give me yet another fucking break. Pure Jersey Shore culture. Going to a club and spending your money on booze while a band is playing is one thing. Just going to hear a DJ and 'dancing'? Who gives a shit! Get a real nightlife people!

Jeez, this city is SO dead and there really is no turning back. It's done, over.

Why are more and more of these fights seemingly women fighting with women? What does that say about our society?

The would suggest the neighbors of Solas research the way in which the residents of West 84th/Amsterdam closed the bar "The Blue Donkey" due to similar late night antics. Eventually they got the liquor license pulled. That will be the only way to bring an end to this.

isn't this where the place with a different name that malcolm forbes hung out with his motorcycle pals and it took years to get it shut down?
it really is time for a neighborhood wide something.
not this useless cb#3 resolution area crap.

before coming to EV i lived with my window facing towards the street to a late night seafood place on the Upper east side. that drove me insane, I bet i would probably assault these people.

Well as long as the community board continues to allow Ariel Palitz to make a mockery of residents and the neighborhood don't expect any end to this kind of humiliation. I can not believe that Dominic Pisciotta Berg allowed her to act the the way she did when he was board chair. She's even worse now. Stringer screwed us. Stringer takes money from the nightlife people, and at our expense. He's running for comptroller. As long as David McWater is running the show around here expect things to get worse. David McWater is the chair on land use and he's on the SLA committee too.

Please keep this up. It is very important to record these things. While CB3 will do nothing to help the situation, as residents are dispensable, the NYSLA will absolutely take these videos seriously.

Residents first.

This is the man who is running the show around here.

The best you can do is phone in 311 complaints..alot. Eventually Solas will be brought in front of CB3 to explain what measures they are taking to avoid having their patrons hang out outside and make a ruckus. This is in essence them defending their liquor license. I have been to these meetings and CB3 doesn't strike me to go too easy on anyone with a rash of noise complaints. Get on CB3's email list as they post what bars are up for review and what date the meetings are. If you have issues with a particular bar you are given time to air your grievances. The video's and gaining more neighbors on your side is positive for the complainer as it shows your not some nut job that is complaining for nothing. Best of luck.

The CB3 SLA Committee is the worst it's ever been. The dumbest most ignorant group in years.

Every single one of them treats residents like garbage. Most of them are power tripping. I'm telling you, it could be somepne like Mark from Russ & Daughters who gets up to protest and the people on the committee are like-"can you make it brief".

They refuse to follow the policy and rules. Residents worked with the committee to create a policy that they could follow. Well you know what, they don't follow it.

The Policy regarding over saturated areas:
In saturated areas CB3 would support a beer and wine license with a 12 am closing.

You know what they do? They ask the applicant if they would accept a beer and wine with a 12am closing, and the applicant says no, and that's the end of that.

CB3 chair Alex Militano lays out all of the applicants information for the committee members, and they ignore her. They make a mockery out of the whole process. It's actually very serious what they are doing, and they should take it seriously. They all just want to get out of there. Many bad businesses get approved just because committee members are tired and cranky and just want to get it over with.

It could be something like- the applicant is here for a renewal of their license, they have forty 311 complaints, the owner just got out of prison and somebody was murdered at the lounge/ restaurant, and committee members will say:

Oh I know this place. They have terrific chocolate chip ice cream, and then they vote to support the applicant. Ignorance. I'm not kidding.

Don't be surprised if and when they go for a renewal if Ariel Palitz tells you what you annoying residents should do. Which is to get bulletproof soundproof windows installed on your apartment windows.

I am an East village resident and I support you. Keep up the good work and you will eventually win.

A few weeks ago there were a bunch of guys fighting outside Solas and the police had to be called. When they were finally let go the guys walked down the street punching cars and store windows. The people who put this project together is right, this happens every weekend.

Anonymous said...

Ugh, I've been there only a couple of times, and that place is pathetic... Everything from the bartenders and the crowd to the DJ, who was terrible, by the way. The guy looked to be about 55 years old and still trying to be "cool." If Solas is as far as your career has taken you, time to turn it down and find something else! #GETALIFE

Anonymous said...

Residents near Solas should also attend the monthly community meetings at the 9th Precinct, report their concerns and establish a relationship there as well as making 311 calls and reporting incidents to CB3. It's a drag and a time commitment but that's what it takes.

I was watching this documentary last night about the Texas school board and their insistence that creationism be included in the same science textbooks where Darwinism was discussed. So they essentially were pushing for science teachers to be forced to teach creationism as science and dismissing evolution as science. A world-renowned anthropologist was testifying before the committee. He was making the case that while people of course had their own beliefs about where man came from, that the theory of evolution met all the criteria of science, while creationism did not. The members of the committee starting debating this guy and questioning his credentials and acting like they were experts. One woman referred to Charles Darwin as Claude Darwins. They refused to acknowledge his expertise and all of a sudden acted as they were the experts in the field. It was hilarious to watch them try to explain the theory of evolution to a man who had spent his entire life immersed in it. It was eerily similar to being at a CB 3 SLA committee meeting, where members who have never lived above a bar, next door to a bar, or run a bar, suddenly lecture residents on what they should do to deal with the havoc these places are creating in their lives. Then this woman Ariel, who does run a lounge, but just one, starts telling applicants and residents what to do, like she is some nightlife expert with clubs, bars and restaurants around the world. She usually tells people to put down carpets and applicants to get security cameras installed so they can view them from home. Then this other woman who I heard works for GOLES, does the same thing. She starts giving advice to residents like she is some expert too on nightlife, noise, etc. Frankly it has gotten to the point where they should just have these meetings in secret and not invite residents at all, because they clearly don’t want people there or to say anything.

@anon 2:16 wow, that is scary picture... BTW, what was the name of that documentary? Sounds like it's worth a look.

I remember looking into becoming a committee member long time ago (out of cuiosity) and one of the requirements was that you must attend at least 3 committe meetings prior to applying. That requirement just said it all for me about these people. Realize this was before the internet was readily available and back then, it was really tough to find out when their meetings would be held and when you did find out, they would start at 5pm. The members were obviously neglecting the residents who do not have the luxury of leaving work early to make it there by 5, and I think it would be safe to say, that's probably 85% of the residents in the any area in Manhattan. i've always been skeptical of the board since.

There is no reason for solas to be brought in front of CBS.. I happened to be at Solas the night of this occurrence. The girl going crazy and her friends started up because Solas turned them away for being too drunk. They were angry they could not get into the bar. Solas is going the best they can. I mean after all it is a bar and you have to take into consideration all the other bars right down the street contributing to the chaos.. I have been going to Solas for a long time and there is a lot of security watching people and making sure they don't get out of hand.

Yes this place Solas sucks as does that whole area, 13th Step is a shitshow but have millions behind them. However these are irresponsible bars that dont do a good job. The crazies are getting riled up and will start complaining about everything now and it will penalize the bars that are responsible. 1 crazy can make it hard for a business to succeed and it's wrong. CB#3 is a joke but on both sides for businesses and neighbors. The best way to deal problems is a group of neighbors to go directly to the Ownership/Mgment of Solas and work something out like gentlemen instead of sniping on the web and community board meetings. Let's get real here folks.

@ Solas Gone Wild

Their liquor license is up for renewal in May. If I were you I would continue documenting by calling 311 and videotaping. Send all 311 complaints to Stetzer on-line. Send videos to Mike Jones at the NYSLA.

Ariel Palitz will try to make the situation seem minor and lobby for them. She will also belittle residents by depicting you as annoying people who complain about everything, that the 311 calls are all from the same person. That the incidents are too few to warrant a liquor license denial, and that you residents should work with the owners.

At any rate I do think that you will eventually win, but then the landlord will try to rent to a similar operator in order to get the money they want, and the whole process starts again, and she will be there lobbying for the new douchebag applicant. The new applicant could be someone she knows.

Anonymous said...

"The girl going crazy and her friends started up because Solas turned them away for being too drunk."

How do you explain the girl taken FROM the club in a stretcher?

Anonymous said...

I agree with Anon 10:32 am in terms of documenting the situation. In addition to the video get date and time-stamped photos and make sure the videos are of different incidents. If not Ms. Palitz will attempt to dismiss the incidents as "isolated" and not refelective of the actions of a "bad operator" like she does on the video below.
She will also try and say that the problems can't be tied to one location. All of course which is nonsense, but a desparate act of self-preservation on her part and those involved in nightlife.

http://youtu.be/xJiwbCSgK9U

If you can get CB 3 to deny the renewal, which they have done on a few occasions recently then you stand a good chance at the NY State Liquor Authority.

Lt. Patrick Ferguson is the guy at the 9th precinct who handles this stuff, so reaching out to him would also be a good idea.

More and more of us who live here need to do this, because noone is looking out for us, so we must look out for ourselves.

I wished this person started recording earlier. Because what you guys are watching is the aftermath of the corrupted actions taken by the bouncers of Solas. Actually i take that back. I cant call them bouncers, they're bullies. Because bouncers restrain people. These bullies just goes around assaulting people, males and FEMALES.

Yes I agree that alcohol triggers the many previous altercations taken place at this bar. But after what I witnessed, I wouldn't be surprised if Solas' employees play a role too. They are the most corrupted and unprofessional employees I have ever witnessed. Either Solas needs to change this or this place has to go..

I don't think that you can really blame the bar for this scene, they were not letting a violent person into their place. Solas does not police the nieghborhood that is the responsibility of the NYPD. I don't think it's fair to target Solas. Remember how much we all hated SantaCon and are dreading St. Patrick's Day? Well, at Solas every weekend is like SantaCon, with the same type/number of clientele. The problem is this kind of drinking culture and the partying generation that perpetuate it. Businesses have to survive and in order to do so they have to cater to the people willing to pay - in this case, obnoxious, entitled twenty-somethings just looking for a chance to get rowdy.

Solas is locally owned and operated and on the weekdays it's a really nice, neighborhoody spot. It's been there for over 15 years, used to play old-school hip-hop and Van Morrison and all that at the weekends, but unfortunately the demographics of the whole East Village is changing and, as a business, Solas is adapting.

Trying to yank the liquor license from Solas alone is mean-spirited and unfair. Why not bring all the bars up before the board? 13th Step is infinitely worse. We've all seen the party buses roll up and down Ave A. The Sunburnt Cow is an awful place to live next to - and during the daytime hours! There are 7-Elevens everywhere - what kind of people do you expect would show up for the East Village nightlife?

There is no need to be nasty (see Anonymous 1/29 12:37pm). There is a decidedly hateful tone running through this comment thread, and it's just something awful to see from people who are purportedly all about community. I've been going to Solas for over three years and have been living in the neighborhood for two. I'm the first to say fuck all the stupid drunk kids that come through here dropping money. I avoid Solas religiously on Fridays and Saturdays. But there are great people working there whose livelihoods depend on the weekend crowd. I love having a pint there during the week. I've held personal and professional events there, even attended a book launch, and got together with a writing group. To try to shut down this business based on the behavior of kids living in the culture of Jersey Shore and the Kardashians is immature and reactive. Move out of the neighborhood if you hate it so much. Move out of the city in general. Some days I think that is my only solution.

To Anonymous (1/29 12:37pm), your comments make me cringe with shame. If someone saw you at your workplace maybe they'd like to make demeaning, judgmental comments about you and your life, too.

There are way too many "Anonymous" posts! Are you ashamed of what you have to say? I didn't know people were so MEAN in this neighborhood. I did participate in the David Schwimmer bashing since I live behind his new property...but that construction noise was 6am-6pm five days a week going on two years. (Plus that building was landmarked!!)

Confession: I'm 25. I have done my fair bit of irresponsible drinking. When I used to "go out" in the East Village my friends and I would mix liquor and soda in a Coke bottle and drink it on the subway in from Brooklyn, usually starting at the Canal Street stop so we'd be properly loosened up by Astor Place. Then we'd stop at Continental for its 5 shots/$10 deal because we're shy girls and just didn't feel confident enough to brave the bar crowds. Finally we would bar-hop, drunk before even having really gone anywhere. Drinks at every bar, most likely shots. We've ended the night at La Caverna, One and One, Piano's - and, yes - Solas. We were never aggressive drunks, never threw up in the street, never needed an amublance, but we've blacked out at one time or another. We've stumbled in our heels and fallen. We always made it home. AND WE'VE NEVER WORN SEQUINS.

So girls are being carted away in stretchers. Is the bar to blame? Which bar? In my experience, by the time we hit our last bar of the night, I'm not even having drinks anymore. I probably shouldn't have had a full nagin of vodka while still on the subway. I probably shouldn't have gone into Continental. I probably shouldn't have binge drank, period. Come to think of it, I probably shouldn't have picked up my drinking habits at Duke University, where our unofficial motto is "work hard, play hard." Or maybe if I were more well-adjusted, or had higher self-esteem, I wouldn't have come to depend on alcohol to give me the confidence to talk to boys.

So now this one bar is getting all the crap for all of my personal issues. And for all of the personal issues of the binge-drinking kids that go there every weekend, just like I used to do. I live on 7th Street and every weekend it's like my neighborhood becomes the Duke campus. I hate it. But I used to do that. I grew up. They haven't. I'm annoyed, I'm angry, I'm bitter, I wish they'd all fall down and die, or at least go back to MacDougal Street. I rail and shout at the fratboy roof parties through my window like a crazy old lady. But I have never blamed a bar. I have never thought, aw man if Solas weren't there I wouldn't have blacked out. I'd have blacked out and made a fool of myself somewhere else. What does the bar have to do with it?

The video series is great, but for the wrong reasons. Duke had this Campus Culture Initiative to target binge drinking - the most useless thing ever - but it had the right idea. Let's document irresponsible drinking so we can stop it. I bet that girl is so embarrassed now, having her wasted face plastered all over YouTube.

Solas Gone Wild - what are your intentions? To shut down every bar in the neighborhood frequented by people my age? And why do you come across as so MEAN? I used to love this blog for its sense of community and solidarity but this has brought out some real nasty people out of the woodwork. Have I got a different point of view now because this time around I'm not a part of the torch-bearing mob?

Crazy Eddie, the self-labeled old player thinks he's some sort of genius. I couldn't make long comments on my cell phone so I had to make multiple ones.

Do you really think you have supported your case by reiterating my comments? How are the comments even rude?

The "noise" levels on the videos aren't even loud. I had to turn up the volume on my speakers to maximum to hear.

A resident constantly waiting for something to happen and videotaping from her window at 1:30 AM on a Saturday night while making calls to 311 any chance she gets. Who is the real troll?

You probably want more "wild" things to happen so you have more false support for your lousy claim.

& Still no answer to any of my questions. Any intelligent person who values complete silence on the weekends would not live in the East Village.

It's not sensible to try to shut down an entire business and end peoples' livelihood because you don't like a bar and haven't tried earplugs. That is rude and heartless.

Binge drinking happens and I try not to judge people in that phase of life, having been through it myself, but it's not really something to be encouraged or defended, either. And when it impacts the rest of the community, people have the right to respond. No one is asking for "complete silence," just a reasonable measure of civility and safety.

I really don’t care what goes on inside the place, if you like that type of club, so be it. It’s what goes on outside that’s the issue. Even a Frat dump like SideBar does not have outside sidewalk issues. And please, leave disparaging Staten Island comments out of the mix here. As David Johansson said “Staten Island has a lot in common with Hawaii”.

LvV said...

Well, anonymous, you seem pretty angry yourself.

Binge drinking can and does happen everywhere, but it is without question that certain bars are hotspots for excessive drunkenness, fights, blackout behavior, etc. That shit is dangerous and bad for the neighborhood. I have no real dog in the Solas fight, but when Superdive, for example, was up and running? I trashed that hellhole every chance I got, and am I sorry it closed? Not for one single second. The community speaks. Conversely, how many of us would like to see 13th Step fall off the face of the earth? In that case, the idiots rule. So we learn to live with it.

If people here want Solas, it will prevail, despite what Crazy Eddie says. But he also might be speaking for the majority.

Kevin, I really have no opinion of your bar -- I never even heard of it before this video -- but I do find it curious that you disparage blog conversation, as if a private phone call is somehow more conducive to "moving forward" than a public conversation, anonymous or not. This blog does a tremendous service to our community, and comments are here for all to see and respond to. I wouldn't discourage people from calling you, but I also don't see how that is a superior conversation method regarding a community issue. You could answer your critics here, after all.

Kevin at Solas again I apologise I meant to say Feb 16th . LvV I appreciate your comment but i feel this situation needs constructive action rather than conducive . Nothing against the blog but I would rather meet the critics in person I have never been contacted by any of them that I can recall . I'm sure you understand . Kevin

Now that Kevin at Solas is aware of what's taking place outside his club on the weekends does this mean we can expect a drama free weekend???

@Anon 2:54 You forgot to tell me to move to Staten Island or Kansas. Still groggy from your nappy nap?

Kevin, thanks for your reply to the issues that were raised in this tread. Jolly good show. Good job. I will try to stop by on an “off” night to have a drink and see what goes on inside. If you check me for proof, you will be my BFF. FYI, 2/16 is a major Valentine’s date night for us married people so not sure if I can make it. As usual, I will be patronizing a local restaurant for the celebration. Now about those MIA QOL signs…………

Thanks Eddie , I'm open to suggestions date wise whatever works best for anyone concerned , anyone can email me with ideas to solasbar@gmail.com . I can meet you all indivdually if that's preferable whatever it takes to make things better all round . Kevin

thanks for the Ariel Palitz videos, i have had some encounters myself, if you go to youtube and type in her name there's this one particular comment that hits the nail on the head. anytime i have ever gone to a cb3 meeting, which hasn't been many, she entirely dominates and is outrightly viscious. what i don't understand is how the other members of cb3 allow this? the committee should be there to serve the community, not her and her cronies.
she votes in any applicant, the more detrimental and despicable the applicant the better. there's something really wrong, what's wrong, what's wrong?

@Anon 4:02 A vimeo channel is not a blog and I don't need to watch a Girls Gone Wild video, I unfortunately have Solas next door. Now go make a fort with the cushions from your couch and fall asleep in it.

Good thread here !! How come there's only one incident on video if it's such a 'trouble spot' ?? Seems a bit harsh ?

It's easy for me to post a comment since I live in Soho and I'm not affected by what people are describing here, but I wanted to express my feelings as a 14-year patron of Solas. The place has always been run professionally. I know they care about their customers from first hand experience. It appears to me that they care about their neighbors as well. On the weekends, I always see one of the owners standing outside regardless of how cold or hot it is. I have NEVER seen this at another bar. They do this because they DO care what happens outside their bar. In fact, I challenge you to FIND a bar owner in his or her establishment on a Friday or Saturday night. All the people that work their try to foster a neighborhood vibe for the place. Although the B&T invade on the weekends... the staff go out of their way to make regulars (locals) feel special.

Excessive noise is not fun, especially considering the cost of Manhattan rent. I was homicidal when Verizon were picketing last year in front of my apt and keeping me up all night. I tried to talk to them, but they wouldn't listen. At least you're dealing with a few guys who are accessible and willing to listen. I bet you'll have success. Give them a chance. I don't want to see anything happen to my favorite bar.
