In case you have cable or something, Lionel Rogosin's great film "On the Bowery" will play on Turner Classic Movies at 2:45 a.m. ... it had a successful run at the Film Forum back in 2010...

Also, there's something called "This is the Bowery" airing tonight at 7:49 on TCM. Here's a description of the short:
This MGM short film, part of the John Nesbitt's Passing Parade series, looks at the Bowery district in New York City. The Bowery is full of bars, cheap restaurants and pawn shops. It's mid-1941 and the film follows a man who has just arrived in the area. Like many others in the Bowery he's unemployed and has no place to stay.
No word on that sequel — "This Was the Bowery."

I think I saw the Bowery Mission stairs where we would sit in between CBGB's sets.
Too much, my head was exploding! If you missed these, do check out the "On the Bowery" website (here's the link from Grieve's post)...There's a map with some great hi-res stills of the neighborhood.

Except for the "cheap" part, CB 2 & 3's SLA committees are doing everything they can to return the Bowery to its worst days. ugh! Actually, we could probably use a pawn shop on the block.
Thank god for the Mission and SRO's - sidewalk sleepers are the only thing left keeping the hipsters away... if only slightly.
"On The Bowery" is AMAZING. Shot in 35mm (some of it by hiding the camera in the back of a station-wagon parked on the street). Beautiful. Though its portrayal of alcoholic/junkie life is really brutal, and not romanticized. See it if you can.
