Baiting Mary Help of Christians
Warning signs are up now at the Mary Help of Christians church and rectory on East 12th Street ... as workers baited the buildings with rat poison in advance of the impending demolition here...
Reps for developer Douglas Steiner filed permits on Thursday to demolish the now-vacant parcel of Mary Help of Christians that includes the church, school and rectory, according to DOB records.
Steiner has said that he'll build an an 80/20 residential development that's "contextually appropriate for the neighborhood."

This post makes me sad. I haven't lived in New York for years, but Mary Help of Christians was where I attended Mass. The parishioners were the nicest, most enthusiastic people and the church had a positive presence in the neighborhood. Even though it's been closed, it will be tough to picture the area without that church.
Those traps should be placed instead in the offices of the Landmarks Negation Committee. They're the true rats in this scenario, and far more troubling than the four-legged squeaky kind.
