David Cross says the East Village on weekend nights is the 'worst fucking place in the world'

Our friend David Cross, former East Village resident, is in a new movie called "It's a Disaster" ... and he gets the "My New York" treatment in the Post today.

And he does not have fond memories of the neighborhood, at least on weekend nights... as he discusses his former apartment on Avenue A and East Third Street.

“Two things made me want to leave the East Village. It was awful, party-central loud and obnoxious. On Friday and Saturday nights, it’s the worst f - - king place in the world. It’s like the French Quarter. There’s broken glass and trash everywhere, puking, yelling and fighting. That combined with how many great little places were turning into Duane Reade and Subway sandwich and Chase banks. And 7-Eleven? That’s not why I moved to Manhattan.”

Cross now lives in Brooklyn.

The problem is all the bridge and tunnel people who com in to town to "be cool" and get drunk. When I lived down there I never went out on weekends and holidays.

No but seriously he's right its out of hand.

I saw the cops close off LES intersections yesterday so the partiers can roam the streets just like New Orleans.

While no one likes the proliferation of chain stores in the neighborhood, I think it speaks volumes about the new spoiled rich kids moving in from the South and Western US.

However, I cannot figure out why there is so much anger about being able to get a 32oz fountain soda for $2, yet no one seems to complain when another $100+ haircut place opens.

This being David Cross, sometime within the next four years he'll be giving interviews about what a shithole Brooklyn is and this isn't what he moved there for and all the exact same complaints transposed to a different zip code. And then wherever he moves to next will get the same treatment. Lucky them!

I live in New Orleans and I've lived in the East Village. I can tell you with complete confidence that the bar scene in the East Village is worse.

The only way any of us hairdressers can afford to live in Lower Manhattan or a desirable place in Brooklyn is to charge $75+ for a haircut. If you want a haircut by someone you'd consider a peer you have to pay for it. Remember the stylist is getting less than half of what you're paying and probably closer to 25-30% of it by the time they've tipped out, deducted product fees, and so forth.

As for the people being "bridge and tunnel" on Fri/Sat, that was true 5-10 years ago, but now those people LIVE in that neighborhood. They are just all 9-5ers. It used to be a much more service industry oriented crowd living there (I knew a ton of musicians, artists, etc who work in bars and restaurants). the weekends were bringing in "tourists" since the 90s, but now the tourists have moved in. (I'm sure the families that were there before the arty community said the same thing about them...)

I've lived in this neighborhood 20 years and he's right. Ran into him last night(in Brooklyn) and had this same discussion. If I didn't have my cheap apartment I'd be outta here faster than shit through a goose!

I like David Cross, but this sounds like another transplant complaining about the city as if it hadn't been in a constant state of change for the 350 years before he got here. "I didn't move here for this..." Ha. Take the good with the bad or move along. It's still the best thing going, and that's not changing, IMHO.

David Cross spent Friday night raging at Heathers and Cabin until 5am. There are still cool places here and he obviously knows that. He was at Heathers from 10ish-130am the Cabin the rest of the night.

I have lived in the East Village for more than 20 years now, I want to leave now. I thought I would never, ever want to leave. But I can't take the whoo-hoo! party crowd anymore. Cross is right. It's gotten out of hand. There was always nightlife in the East Village, but now it's careening drunken frat and sorority types torturing the neighborhood. It's so sad.

It's true it's no longer a B and T it's an EV crowd! These Dbags live here. There is no good with the bad. Not just weekends, 24-7 having to look at their stupid...everything! Talking about golf and their useless corporate job that does nothing to make this word better. This neighborhood is over as far as being interesting goes.

I wish we could pressure the CB to get the caberet police force they talk about and start handing out citations to people who think this is a frat party.I feel if enough tickets get passed out then the wooohoo crowd will find this place a bore and move on.

He was so good in Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

It's true about it not being the bridge and tunnel crowd causing the problem. These people live here now! They even live in my building. So I don't just hear them in the streets, I have to hear them in the hallway when they come home from a night of partying.

It's quiet here on 7th btwn 1st and 2nd - it's sad he was too dumb to realize there are quieter parts of the hood.

Funny how hicks and out of staters label people from the Outer boroughs as "Bridge and tunnel". This hick Cross should move back to French Lick if he doesn't like it here.

What's up with the hate? David Cross is correct, EV= frat party meets the Carrie Diaries. Sorry he hurt your feelings, Sorority Sisters and Frat Bros, but it's true.
