Used Citibike today... Loved it. System worked well, bikes were good. We got around to the W Village, Union Square, back over to the Hudson River, LES, and then back home very easily. We stopped whenever we wanted to check something out (food, shopping, just walk around) and we did more in 4 hours than we ever did without bikes. It was nice not having to worry about where to dock it - they're everywhere.
Most people shouted out nice things and asked how it was... only a few of the naysayers were vocal about it. Some groups protested near the dock stations because they wanted them out of pedestrian spaces... but overall, good times!
This is way worse than the toilet paper in duane reade that say "for Flushing, NY" on the package.

Apparently you can use debit cards, but they are still connected to a bank account which requires approval from US Treasury. This is not open to the public at large, only those who passed muster against one of the federal Govt' secret databases.
Wow, so much anger over bicycles. This is such a sad thread to read. The system seems to be a pretty good one, minus the excessive advertising, and with some tweaks to placement of stations and traffic enforcement.
But then shouldn't the conversation be toward increased public funding to reduce costs/advertising, continued community involvement in placement, and increased traffic enforcement?
Or maybe we should just keep up with the name calling. Yep. Let's do that.
do you know WHY there are so many complaints? because bloomberg treats this city like it's his company and we all just work here and should be grateful we have jobs.
20 years ago, the city would have held hearings via local community boards and gotten public and city agency input before putting these bike stations in RESIDENTIAL areas, taking up already insufficient parking and pedestrian space. there was no such coordination with the local community.
add to that the fact that people must PAY to use something that is basically a garish mobil billboard for a company that hasn't paid federal taxes since 1995.
i just hope the NYPD pulls people over for citibiking while s*@&faced on the weekends. that'll be funny.

PS: In the first 24 hours there were 12,000+ trips (US record broken, not bad considering only founding members were eligible to ride this week) and annual membership now stands at 20,000+. Bike share is here to stay.
Citi Bike share continues the oligarch-sponsored trend of turning Manhattan into a Manhattan-themed amusement park, complete with exorbitant prices for goods cheaply available on the outside, a proliferation of cheap concession stands(FROYO)and the reduction of working class population to abused janitors bullied into relative silence lest they upset the big spenders.
In Boston these ridiculous installations have unironically been placed directly in the bike lane such that bike traffic must merge into the stream of automobiles(harvard ave south of allston for instance). They are there for tourists and little rich girls to rent for the 'experience' and as a laughably transparent advertising/PR initiative - not to facilitate 'sharing' or serious commuting via bicycle(just look at the things).
That said, I have no doubt whatsoever it is 'here to stay' as large corporations prefer to 'fail forward' and let us peasants work around the results of their monolithic mistakes.
