The Wall Street Journal does not care much for Citi Bikes

Several readers have pointed us to this video from The Wall Street Journal, in which editorial board member Dorothy Rabinowitz rips Mayor Bloomberg and the entire bike-share program.

Great post from WSJ.

I love salty old New Yorkers like Dorothy Rabinowitz. People of her ilk, like everything else that used to make up the identity of New York, are vanishing.

What a stupid dumb bitch. Dorothy has her head up her wrinkly arse.

Salty my A$$. She's just a self centered uber wealthy snob who didn't say "boo" when Rudy and Mike were implementing policies that impacted only the "little people." In fact, i'm certain she applauded those policies...

I was on the fence about the bikes, but if this UES buffoon is against them, i'm all for them.

Sure enough, she fully supports stop and frisk. Screw her

Anon 11:04: Seriously? Rich, privileged, NIMBY conservatives who claim to speak for "the majority" are the real New Yorkers now? As part of the lowly 99%, I'm excited to have a new way to move around more quickly and save money on the subway in the long term. That deranged woman, claiming that bikes are more dangerous than cars, should take a look at accident statistics for NYC. She's ridiculous and it's sad that some people will support her only because they don't like CitiBike either. You don't have to be mendacious to express your opposition to something, you know.

The bike haters like this old blowhard like to focus on bicyclists as law breakers as though every rule of the road for cars should apply to bikes. However, I see no complaints about the abundance of jaywalking and other rules NYPD does not enforce. Fortunately, the NYPD has better things to do.

sure jay walkers can be dangerous but they don't run people over, knock them down, and send them to the hospital

if there are traffic rules for pedestrians why shouldn't there be for bikers?

I thought Ayn Rand was dead.

Bicyclists who hit a pedestrian should get a ticket, but this is an extremely rare event and does not justify the hysterics from the bike haters.

Not suggesting there should not be any rules, but I'd advocate a reckless standard, not rules that make no sense which almost no one obeys and police never enforce.

I absolutely agree with what she's saying about the dictatorial way this program was implemented, to the person that said that they are lowly 99% and for the program, lol, a program brought to you by citibank and a billionaire who does not give a crap about poor people and somehow that has something to do with the 99%. what a joke

Hey, Anon 11.04, how about this good old New Yorker, speaking out about bikes in NYC:

What a blue-nosed, desiccated old harridan. Fortunately, innovation and progressive ideas will continue long after her Sharpie-colored head is laid on the satin pillow of her coffin.

its not 'sharing' Its a bike rental system. For people that have expendable income.

"For people that have expendable income."

Oh please, an annual membership is cheaper than a monthly Metrocard. This is a real part of our mass transit system, not a freaking fox hunt or dressage tournament.

...salty old New Yorkers like Dorothy Rabinowitz...

Ms Rabinowitz may be salty--and I like salt, esp. old NY salt--but she's also a cruel, disingenuous, highly privileged, and harmful person. She has a long history of supporting only people as privileged as her and the rest of us be damned. I have mixed feelings about Citibike but, whew, Ms Rabinowitz is giving me warm feelings about it.

Hahahhah, sure looks like the Citi Bike marketing team has been working overtime adding comments to this post. The pro-bike program comments are HIGHLY suspicious!!!

Actually - bicycles are required to follow the same traffic rules as cars. It's one of the first sentences in the NY State driving manual.

The bike rental systems in NYC and London are based on the Bixi system here in Montreal (does Rabinowitz know that?), which has been running since the spring of 2009, so we're heading into the fifth year of it. It's a great amenity for the city for both residents and tourists, but it doesn't work ecological miracles. Studies here have shown that it doesn't reduce the number of car trips in any substantial way if at all. Some of the problems Rabinowitz mentions--fire access, for instance--aren't that hard to solve--you just move the bike stands around, and her comment about how the bike stations "besmirch" neighborhoods sounds like it comes from the dowager countess in Downtown Abbey. The problem of dangerous cyclists doesn't really have anything to do with bike rental programs. Mowing down pedestrians on the sidewalk is a crime and it should be prosecuted. It is here. Or at least it's starting be be. It takes a while for the culture of commuting to change, for all three groups to watch out for one another, while the cops, without being unduly aggressive, need to enforce the traffic laws.

I've realized my real objection is the constant in my face of the citi brand, which will eventually be replaced with paid advertising.

Whoa. The next time someone on EV Grieve starts defending Dorothy fuking Rabinowitz as some sort of 'salt of the earth New Yorker', roll me over cos I hope I'm dead.

I can't believe she actually said with a straight face "Oh, the bike lobby is all-powerful"

WOW as a guy who rides a shitty jalopy bike everywhere I am pleased to hear that I had political clout all this time and never knew it.

In looking at some of the documents to find out how much the taxpayers are paying for this bike rental corporation, I note that you ARE being tracked and monitored.

"New York’s bikes will also have GPS units on board, allowing for location of missing bikes."
