Is it too late to register to set up a booth, where I can sell commemorative t-shirts?
I remember these riots... and the pic is little revisionist tho don't you think, "the smacks" were suffered more by those on the other side.
when I first saw this ad for the riot reunion I actually thought somebody was trying to organize a new riot to tear up the park, lol I had no idea it was a concert!
I remember walking down St Marks Place the night of the riot, it was the middle of a heatwave, the streets were packed, there were a lot of very angry people around, angry about the midnight curfew Mayor Koch had imposed on the park. Koch didnt seem to care that NYC is the one city that doesn't just close down at some arbitrary time. Before the curfew Tompkins Sq had lots of squatters living there, many evicted from nearby buildings, and it never closed down. You could just feel that something very bad was going down that night. It was a similar vibe to the early days of Occupy Wall Street, you just could feel the police were about to start cracking heads. The police ringed the park and tried to prevent marchers from entering. Of course all hell broke loose. People with big old Nikons and clunky video cameras had them all knocked out of their hands by the billy clubs when the riot began. Lots of people got hurt, lots more got arrested. That was the day the Lower East Side became the East Village, the developers had won the war. That was the beginning of the end of all the LES had been before.. Ah, the good old days....
Yes I watched the riot from outside King Tut's Wah Wah Hut - too wasted to figure out... oh, never mind.
The park is a lovely place to be now that it is no longer a homeless campsite.
The park is a dead zone compared to the lively 24 hour place it used to be. Now it is a day time only upwardly mobile white people's dog run. Most of the people who used and lived in the park in the past were poor and not white. TSP is a great example of money and power ethnic cleansing. Should White Power be applied when thinking about changes to the park and the hood ? I say YES !
They gonna smash the windows at the Christodora. You know. For old time's sake?
I use the park and have neither a dog nor upward mobility. Perhaps that means i'm already as upward as I'll ever be. My two year old, however, loves the park. Is that ok with you?
