A starling takes a look last at the eastern bell tower on the Mary Help of Christians Catholic church.
Because it's coming down right now...
Workers removed the western bell tower
on Wednesday. The lot is being cleared to make way for a new housing development.

Any idea what they are going to do with the architectural antiques?
A type of cultural murder.
Would feel worse about loss of the church if they had sold to a developer with a multi-use, community friendly program instead of another stack of high priced condos.
In a neighborhood full of vileness, this takes the entire fucking cake. For me, nothing will top this, and it has made me begun to consider the heretofore unthinkable - leaving New York.
Is this really heartbreaking? I think people have lost all perspective.
Many things in the world can be heartbreaking, shmnyc; this obviously is for many people, so it is not for you to question why. It does not hurt or impact your life if others mourn the passing of a beloved part of their neighborhood; by telling them they are wrong you basically expose yourself for the shallow narcissist you are. Why, just think how you would feel, if someone tore down the bridge you live under.
LoL... so many opinionated people here who hold their opinions higher than others.
This is just a building, an old one and it would have been great IF it could have been preserved or at least parts of it re-purposed like St.Anns on 12th street BUT the real heartbreak here is the how the Church thru its own mishandlings has HAD to sell off properties like this, so they are the real ones to blame and not some developer who sees an opportunity. The other choice is to leave properties abandoned and let a neighborhood go fallow, because nobody is going to build you a "community center" for free.
So while you throw rocks inside your glass house, consider this: You'd have a lot more sunlight if YOUR bridge was gone.
Man where is all that fallow space. I need a place to graze my pony.
.... must be wherever the great angel's share of living space just disapeared to from all the new mini-apatments planned for the city.
@Hooker, why not just follow your own advice in your identity?
