Lyric Diner returning to former Lyric Diner space
The latest in the Lyric Diner saga.
First, a quick recap!
Taverna, the Greek restaurant that took over the Lyric Diner space on Third Avenue at 22nd Street, closed a few weeks ago after just six months in business. The same owners closed Lyric Diner last August.
However, as a reader notes in the above photo, the Lyric is returning.
pcvstBee first reported this development on Saturday. No word just yet on an opening date.
And it's probably a good thing that Taverna kept up some Lyric Diner signage upon opening...

This is just too, too bizarre.
Was it the same staff working at Taverna?
This is good news. I loved the lyric (especially the massive dinner specials that provided leftovers for like two subsequent meals).
Is this -- dare I say it -- the turning point? No, probably not. Hopefully they saved the neon.
Okay -- we'll take it!
So what was the point in shutting it down in the first place then?
...maybe he thought a more "upscale" place would do better? (Look around...some of the newbies are doing okay.)
Meanwhile, I wish they'd bring back Pete's Place (of Third Avenue)...
The old Lyric was by far the best diner in the neighborhood. I was sad to see it go. A good diner is a community asset, a meeting place, I am very happy to hear of it's return!
DNAinfo confirms Lyric is coming back as a Diner, this time with a full bar and late night specials. I just knew they would be finding a way to start serving tequila! Maybe they should call it Club Lyric. Glad its coming back, and I'm sure the Community Board agrees we could really use a few more bars in the neighborhood. Here's an unintentionally revealing quote by George, the Lyric's owner:
"It's going to be the same diner, but a little different," owner George Kalogerakos said outside the under-construction restaurant this week. "It'll have a bar now and a new late-night menu.... The dinner menu will be different with new items and better quality food."

Hey George, what were you serving up for dinner during all those years at the Original Lyric, compost?
