Several week ago, we noted that Extra Place and Heidi, the sister restaurants along Extra Place, the pedestrian walkway off East First Street, were closed for renovation, per a sign at the door.
That sign is gone, and an EVG tipster noted workers removing tables and equipment from the restaurants yesterday... The Extra Place website is no longer active.
In July, CB3 dropped the hammer on the restaurants, denying renewal of its beer and wine license. (Per CB3: "The applicant has usurped a public pedestrian plaza for its private use in violation of New York City Department of Transportation restrictions by setting up an illegal sidewalk café in said public plaza.")
Extra Place was originally on the October CB3/SLA agenda for a new liquor license. However, they were a scratch before Oct. 7's meeting.
The restaurants opened in July 2012,and received fairly positive notices for their food.
At this point, it doesn't appear the restaurants will return... or that Extra Place will ever work as a shopping-dining destination...

What the hell - they let every restaurant on 2nd Ave have outdoor cafes, they all hang out into the public street, servers use the sidewalk to take orders, they're just in the way, but this area gets shut down? Sounds like someone didn't make a payment in a paper bag.
The outdoor seating concept could really be a boon to Extra Place becoming a more trafficked destination.

It seems like it would be one of the more suitable places for that than any of the avenues or side streets where more residents live nearby.
Agree with nygrump and Matt, this would be a very good place for restaurants with outdoor seating.
There's a great little alleyway or side street off of Union Square in San Francisco. I forget the name, but it's closed to traffic and has a few little restaurants with tables in the middle of the street, and there's usually someone playing music, sometimes there's a woman singing Puccini arias down at the other end near Market. It's similar to Extra Pl. and it works really well for a relaxed and quiet outdoor seating away from all the cars and traffic. Someone definitely needs to take a second look and give these places their approvals.
