Reader report: Someone dumped the turtles from the Ninth Street Community Garden into a hole
[At the garden last spring via Bobby Williams]
An EVG Facebook friend shared a WTF story from over at the Ninth Street Community Garden at Avenue C. Last week, someone gathered the garden's turtles ... and dumped them into a hole in the back of the garden. Thankfully, Garden volunteers recovered the turtles. None of the turtles were apparently hurt.
Per our Facebook friend: "So sad that someone would do that ... those turtles are a bit of a main attraction. Hopefully they'll be left alone."

The turtles seek out more suitable habitat and you invent a boogeyman?
There's nothing lower than animal cruelty.
they were tunneling to freedom
This is horrible. I've spent all summer with those turtles and have seen so many others enjoying them. What kind of person would do this? Shameful.
Community Garden politics is toxic.
"Community Garden politics is toxic."
Argh. Compared to, say, national politics (or community board politics)? Ha. Considering the complexities of the community gardens, and after attending a zillion community garden meetings, I'd say the politics of the EV community gardens are benign, even generally fairly positive. Sure, there are plenty of crazy people involved in the gardens but you are going to have that in nearly all political settings and rational gardeners outweigh the crazies.
As for the turtles . . . I'm glad they are okay.
Maybe it was just some unsupervised kids playing with them?
When you say "unsupervised kids" you mean college douchefrat kids, right?
Those aren't just turtles. They're Red Ear Sliders. Please allow them their natural dignity.
Are they OK out there in the winter?
They winter on St Barts didn't you know? Failure to get the memo is no excuse...
Love that few turtles can stir up the EVGrieve commentary!
