[Friday]
The plywood came down Friday to unveil the Standard East Village's new sidewalk cafe concept on Cooper Square...
[Saturday]
... and a more final look from yesterday...
...complete with Christmas trees...
We first reported on the changes here back in April 2012.
Updated 9:48 a.m.
EVG reader Robert Miner notes the pace this morning... ready for action...
The Café Standard is open 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday-Wednesday and until 4 a.m. Thursday-Saturday.
Previously on EV Grieve:
Big changes in the works for the Standard East Village lobby, outdoor space; Café on the Bowery anyone?

Christmas tree?
Uh… yeah. They're clearly bucking for unfair advantage. Somebody better inform ICTTSS so that this tree can be tagged and noted for future disqualification.
OMG! This is hideous! What were they thinking? Is this new faux "Ye Olde New York" façade some corporate drone's idea of softening the hard edges of the old design, and making the street level fit in with the local Neighborhood tenement vibe? If so it is a horrible fail! it looks like a pastiche hell from my worst nightmares. While the original designed needed reconfiguring, it was actually an interesting space. This is an embarrassing joke..
I walked by last night and had the same reaction. I get the update to the ground floor of the existing building - that is done reasonably well - but plastering faux 1900s on the ground floor of the modern angular glass box - what the hell was anyone thinking?
Continuing proof that you don't need to be smart or have taste to be very rich.
At least this new design is offering our neighborhood something other than glass and steel. Balazs has a tenacity for creating cool and fun places to drink and eat. Be glad it is him and not some Marriot conglomerate. Also, we should give it a chance before we are so quick to condemn it - geez, it just opened today guys!
@ 10:17 AM: Good to know I am not the only one who reacted this way. I was trying to think of precisely which pastiche nightmare this reminded me of... I think it is set somewhere between Woodbury Common and Disney World
Just in time for winter!
Toto, I've a feeling we're not in EV any more. Now I know we never left Kansas.
And Holiday trees, you don't want protests outside Gruber's office.
Do they have a Heddie Jones Lounge?
And will folks be able to watch the Astor Pl. renovation from here, all next year, and wipe the dust and grime off their faces? Can't wait!
Come on now - it's a huge improvement compared to before the new guy took over. The building itself is still an eyesore, but they've done a good job with the garden area on 5th street compared to what it looked like before. The materials do look a little cheap though.
Complete disaster of incompatible styles.
Reminds me of that old joke about God inventing the platypus. I'd retell it, but I don't remember it.
- East Villager.
Seriously? "Holiday trees?" They're just normal trees, chill out.
This is an absolutely ridiculous and grotesque amalgamation.
Terrible Terrible Terrible...
