Welcome to the East Village (waves middle finger)
On Tuesday, Jim Power unveiled his latest mosaic... on the southwest corner of St. Mark's Place and Avenue A. The folks at Crif Dogs put up $600 for Jim to repair the hole that was in the sidewalk ... and to prevent anyone from being injured.
We asked Jim about the mosaic's middle finger.
"[It's] a message to old Mayor Bucko and the new one, Mayor De Bozo," he said via email. "They are spending $16 million to block the neighborhood's entrance at Astor Place while our streets and sidewalks are in dangerous disrepair."
Meanwhile, find out more about how you can help Jim restore his Mosaic Trail on his blog.

I like it!
I like to think of it as an F U to the woo set and the girls who say, "like" every other word in their nasaly, thin voice.
This is my favorite Jim Power's mosaic.
Of. All. Time.
Is that an advertisement for CRIF DOGS in there? Seems a bit of Hypocrisy...The Counter Culture East Village present you with the Finger!!!....Now a word from our sponsors...
Why is Crif Dogs responsible for funding repairs to city infrastructure? is what I want to know.
I generally support the Mosaic Man's work as an enhancement to the neighborhood. This one, however, is just obnoxious. Rudeness is not a essential quality of the East Village that should be encouraged or cultivated.
As for his comments about Astor Place, I don't understand how the renovations "block the neighborhood's entrance". If anything, there finally will be a feeling of an entrance to the EV.
As for the Crif Dogs ad....hot dogs are disgusting.

Tell that to the wooo douche bros and wooo sorority girls and college kids and "Hip young crowd planting roots at Bloom 62" (or any of those glass condos). That pretty much sums up the message behind that mosaic.
So completely different from the clever and beautiful mosaics Jim has always done, this one is so sour simpleminded and just nasty in tone. Why do I think the design of this one came from someone other than The MosaicMan?
Someone unable to intelligently articulate their unfocused anger? Now THIS is the EV I was born into!
Mosaic Man is a person with passion, anger, joy, disdain, and acceptance; meaning he is HUMAN. And he vents and expresses his feelings through his art.
The people criticizing him and this piece don't seem to get that.
What, he is supposed to remain cheery and precious? That is the only way you can accept and tolerate him and his artistry? He does not owe anyone a constant cheerful disposition.
This is simply ugly and unpleasant. I hate to see it, and Jim is such a better artist than this piece, I agree with the poster who said it seems that someone else designed or directed this, I know Jim, casually, for 15 years now and I do not think this reflects his sensibility. I certainly hope not.
10:03AM, have you never cursed out loud? This is Jim's way of cursing out loud. Judging him for doing so is laughable.
This is great! A nice little hidden piece when you look down, and it repairs a hole in the sidewalk. Giv ma break if you're bother by it being a middle finger. This is LES my dude!
