As you can see from the sign, Veselka is closed until tomorrow morning...
We wanted to give you all a heads-up that Veselka will be closed for a little maintenance from MIDNIGHT SUNDAY until TUESDAY MORNING.

All the tables and chairs were moved from the dining room and workers were buffing/something the floors.
Meanwhile, at 6 St. Mark's Place, the Tofu House closed yesterday...
Signs point to a renovation.
There's no other information available. Phone calls get routed to a generic Verizon voice-mail box. The Tofu House Facebook page hasn't been updated since December 2011.

The smart money is on permanent closure for NY Tofu House. There's an oversaturation of Korean restaurants (Pan, across the street just closed too) and a dearth of truly good food. I just hope Hanjoo hangs on.
Atlas Cafe is back open!
Apropos of nothing, when the location of the Tofu house was a convenience store, I would go there very late at night and work on my startup. I lived right around the corner, but spending too many hours at home made me feel a little stir crazy.
After a few nights, I became friends with their employees and I now associate a lot of the effort of getting my company off the ground with the friendly chats and support I got while I co-worked there. They're long gone and I assume so is my friend, but as my business moves closer to hiring employee #100, I am often reminded of that time and that experience, listening to Madonna's "Open Your Heart" and writing code at 4 AM, tucked away in a bodega in the East Village while everyone else was sleeping.
