Thank you and good night

EVG reader William Klayer was outside De Robertis around 8 p.m. when the family closed the gate for business for the last time at 176 First Ave. The last words were a simple, "That's all she wrote."

Previously on EV Grieve:

I was at work all day, stopped in last night to wish them well. Vito would be proud. I hope they get the tiles lifted from entry to save, I asked if they were making a book for future generations to see the place Nono Vito created. I was searching for old photos and found out their distant cousins live in my families town, Turin. They are true turinese, hard working and kind . I hope they take a family trip to Italy and take a cafe at Cafe Flora. Then shop on Via Roma at the fancy stores!

Can everyone just stop? The family did what they wanted to do. Would you exchange $12 million for getting up at baker's hours seven days a week?
PS--Being going there a few times a month for thirty-three years.

"Can everyone just stop" what?

I will miss this place, but I can't blame them for cashing out. None of them will ever have to work again!

The place was around for 110 years. It is deserving of a long goodbye. I'm happy for the family too. I will miss them as well!!!

Everyone mourns these types of closures differently. Sadness. Cynicism. Joy. Please don't dictate how people are SUPPOSED to feel, no matter how many years you've been going there. You are not better than anyone else.

my mom sent this to me when I forwarded the article to her. We lived on the Lower eastside in the 80s:

You were about 10 days old when you made your first trip to DeRobertis. I had many people around me my first few days home with you, but then suddenly everyone (my friend Millie, Rosie, Carol and Vin) were gone back to their everyday lives and I was alone with you. I carried you to DeRobertis in a little seat I had for you, and had a cappuccino. Talked to a number of folks who came by to admire you and felt better.

Another EV landmark gone.
