East 9th Street buildings starting to grow taller

Work continues on the north side of Ninth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue, where back in 2012 the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) OK'd rooftop additions for four of the buildings on this block.

Work began late last year for the new floor at No. 329... and you can see how's it's looking so far...

The buildings were previously owned by Icon Realty, who sold them to Kushner companies in the spring of 2013. Kushner paid $28.75 million deal for 329-335 E. Ninth Street (and 325 E. 10th St.).

Councilmember Rosie Mendez and the Greenwich Village Society of Historical Preservation, among others, spoke out against the additions on this block. The BSA didn't seem to mind.

While we're on this block, you can see how the new building is (slowly) coming along at next door 327 E. Ninth St., the site of a former residential parking lot. We first reported on this six-story, two-unit residential building back in August 2012.

Eventually, No. 327 will look like ...

East 9th Street buildings will soon be taller thanks to the NYC Board of Standards and Appeals

East Ninth Street parking lot will yield to 6-floor residential building

Of course the BSA doesn't mind. They have no idea what the definitions of the term "standards" is, and consequently have none.

They are only supposed to get the added floor if they agree to make 20% of the units affordable, but there is a loophole. If they can claim that they need the additional space to make the project financially viable then that standard get's waived. I would encourage people to go to CB 3 land use meeting where all this stuff is vetted first. The CB is doing a good job not caving to the developers, but as usual they are only an advisory group and BSA doesn't have to answer to them so . . .that said more protesting about this could get the ear of someone at the BSA.

personally I'm all for it, keep the feel of the older buildings and still add some much needed apartments

Yeah m2ndSt! To hell with the tenants whose lives are being made miserable by the ongoing construction. Let Kushner keep improving the East Village as only he and the other developers can!

populations are growing, construction is going to be part of all our lives for a long time to come

Want to really raise the value of East Village real estate? DON'T pollute it with tall buildings. Look at the soulless wasteland of so much of the rest of the island. We're one of the last pieces of old Manhattan left. Want to make your 5-story building worth less in the long run? Make it taller.

Ugly as fuck. They look like Quonset huts for trailer trash, except they're being built for hipster trash. And I do hope they tested the building adequately, that they are able to hold up under the extra weight? And that the crane they're using is safely operated? If I had a rocket launcher, I'd blast these things off the roofs they're defacing.

When are they going to finish this? It is a 2 unit building, was supposed to be finished a year and a half ago. Most recently, it was supposed to be finished last month. They are continuing to disturb the neighbors with noise and shouting all day, every day (6 days a week), for 4 years!! ...just to make 2 new apartments in the neighborhood. We've tried calling the numbers posted on the site but they didn't work. Of course that was 2 years ago. I could build the whole thing by myself faster than they're doing it.
