Where to apparently live like a movie star on East 13th Street

From outside, 228 E. 13th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue looks like a typical neighborhood walkup...

But! Don't be fooled. Here's a new listing for the penthouse at Metropolitan Property Group:

PALATIAL PENTHOUSE apartment with a massive WRAP AROUND TERRACE and a tremendous private ROOF DECK! If you want to experience downtown Manhattan like a movie star this is the place for you! The apartment is extremely private and occupies an entire wing of the building. It's located in an immaculate Art Deco ELEVATOR building with laundry room.

Take a look...

Three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Asking rent: $7,500 per month.

Updated 1/4

Streeteasy lists the unit at 228 E. 13th St.

What they fail to mention to potential tenants is that the movie they are referring to is Animal House.

Well, for starters that building is no way Art Deco. And I can't see how there might be a palatial penthouse atop a tenement building like that. Maybe they got the address wrong?

7500 actually seems cheap. I feel dirty.

228 can't be between 1st and 2nd Avenues as you state -- you need to correct that to between 3rd and 2nd Avenues!

Last time I checked Brad Pitts kitchen wasn't bought in the discount aisle at Lowes.

Not only that, it's an old-law (pre-1886) tenement, otherwise known as a "dumbbell" tenement. I assume the "penthouse" takes up the whole roof? Did the landlord get a variance for that?

(Oh, wait: I went back and read that the apartment takes up an "entire wing" of the building. Well, considering that the entire building is built on a 25 x 100 foot lot, that "wing" is probably smaller than my apartment.)

No board approval? What's the point of a co-op then? Also, It's not a penthouse if you have to walk up 5 flights to get to it.

This building and the two to its right DO have a movie star pedigree. Taxi Driver was filmed there (Jodie Foster's character's place of business, and the closing gruesome scene).

taxi driver was filmed on that block but the end bloody scene was not filmed at 228 e 13.

that was filmed in the hallways of the smaller brownstone that now contains that fancy pizza - i believe it to be 208 e 13 - the tenants in the building were very angry about that shoot in their hallway and tried to get it stopped.

the owner of 208 (jerry) was a partner of the regina "hotel" (13th & 3rd), a by-the-hour hotel that also provided affordable rooms to many low-income people that worked in the neighborhood.

One more note, the pair of matching town houses are lived in by one family. Yes, 4 floors x 2 for a single family. There is also a sewing pool on one of the town houses gourd floor. This means that someone very wealthy lives just next door and will get to enjoy the sounds and smells of all the frat parties on this building's rooftop play space, woo!.

Where did you source the address? It's not listed in the original ad. 228 E 13th St doesn't have a penthouse apt on its roof.

I used to live in 228 East 13th Street until 2008 and I don't think this is the right address for that property. We do need board approval on renters, we don't have an elevator and didn't have a laundry room. The roof access is split between two different owners. There is no "penthouse" and the building was at the maximum square feet allowed under the current zoning guidelines so there would be no way to legally build out a penthouse.

The exterior of 228 and its neighbors was used in Taxi Driver as the exterior shot for Iris' home. It's a lovely building and I had great neighbors for the years that I lived there!
