The plywood arrived last week outside the former Russian Souvenirs shop on East 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
The work permits say that a coffee shop is in the works...
Unfortunately, there isn't any other information at the moment about who the tenant will be.
Curious what will become of the former signage. I always liked this one. (Maybe it will become the Russian Souvenirs Coffee Shop? Ha.)
The shop specializing in (Russian, duh) tchotchkes closed last July. The proprietor said that his rent had increased.

The new NYC is gonna bore us to death.
Not that we really need more coffee, but at least it's better than another bank. Or another Duane Reade. And I personally find a decent coffee shop more useful than a salon (or an empty storefront, for that matter).
I bought several African masks there, real cheap.
Better than yet another sports bar or themed bar. I guess coffee addiction is better than alcoholism?

Also, could we stop using the "At least it's not a bank or a Duane Reade" line regarding spaces that are entirely too small to house a bank or Duane Reade? Just say "At least it's not a bong store."
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Russian souvenirs just aren't that interesting.
Anyone know what happened to the owner? He was full of stories.
It was quite a place, the Russian souvenir store.
Bought some cool antique soldiers and toys there over the years, sad too see it go. But at least it's not going to be a "bong store"!
I live a few doors down and this is a welcome addition to the block. Looking forward to getting more details.
