For rent sign arrives at the Stage
We first reported last Wednesday that the 35-year-old diner at 128 Second Ave. was for rent.
EVG correspondent Steven noted that the actual for rent sign has just arrived on the space between East Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place.
The asking rent for the space is $15,000. The listing at Icon Realty notes that the space is "perfect for a restaurant, cafe, or all general retail uses."

It's a goddammed shame.
I still won't set foot in the Starfucks that displaced the Orchidia.

$15k a month seems like a big number for a restaurant. That's a lot of sandwiches.
This is sad, an example of a place that cared about its customers instead of becoming a branded franchise for investors to make a fortune on.
In other news, Google now has Empire Biscuit listed as Permanently Closed. Weren't they supposed to reopen by now?
The Orchidia started the demise of the EV. The rent went from $500. to $5,000.. Made the front page of the Times. Then Ben&Jerry's came in. They didn't last long. The junkies came in and sat in the windows nodding out in their ice creams. When they jerked their heads up, there would be a big dollip of cream smack in the middle of their foreheads. Funny/sad.
The Orchidia - now there was an EV landmark!!! Of course, Le Metro, next door, was not too shabby, either.

Sad, but I have to agree with the other post...most people who live here now don't care. As long as the the bros and hoes have a place to drink and charge their phones; they only need a $ Pizza and they are living the dream. Their community is Facebook and Twitter so what do they care.

Maybe if people actually confront ICON and hit them in the wallet they might not be so quick to destroy NYC. I think it's time for that Icon joke Chris Coffey to issue another statement on how he loves this city. That hack should be ashamed of himself trying to explain away the behavior of these pigs.
cmarrtyy: you are right that "the Orchidia started the demise of the EV". part of the problem for Orchidia was that the support for the renewal of their lease (at a more reasonable rent) included demonstrating outside the landlord's home - that immediately stopped the negotiations.
and it certainly is too bad but accurate that most of the people who live here now don't care. are there enough of us that do care to make a difference?

That's pretty stupid, actually. All you are doing is telling any small business that they shouldn't open in the East Village. Instead it will be a bank or Starbucks, and then you'll really be happy.
Any "small business" moving into a $15,000 a month hole in the wall is going to be selling shit I can't afford to buy.
It seems appropriate that Icon's logo is a twisted shape.
