Sushi comings and goings

An EVG reader noted the recent closure (end of June) of Iron Sushi on East 10th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue... a for rent sign has been up on the storefront... their Upper East Side location remains open...

Meanwhile, one block away, a sushi restaurant is opening at 350 E. Ninth St. near First Avenue...

The space was home to A.K. Shoe Repair until last August ... then a tobacco-variety shop came and went here fairly quickly.

Thanks to Steven for the photos

The strange thing about this place was that it was usually empty. For years I wondered how they stayed afloat and why there wasn't a lot of traffic. I dined there a couple of times. It was good, but not memorable or outstanding. Too bad.

There are many Western people out there

who aren't really bothered by such distinctions

as those between the various different cultures of Asia

Chinese vs. Japanese for instance

always assumed this was one of those places that catered to such people

It was not fancy or the best sushi, but is was reasonably priced, tasted good, the staff were nice and they always remembered regulars. Had a great happy hour with cheap saki and rolls. Never had any bad food in years of going. It was just a comfortable and affordable neighborhood place I will really miss them.
