After our previous post on the topic, EV Fungi reader Jackson Gilkey, a gardener at La Plaza Cultural on Ninth Street and Avenue C, shared the above photo... of that yellow fungus growing on the smaller willow. Jackson notes that you can see it from Ninth Street near the western end of the garden by the gazebo.
Consensus seems to be that this is chicken of the woods.

Fungus / mushrooms on a live tree are not a good sign of tree health.
Chicken of the woods or sulpher shelf is a choice edible!
As kids used to say when anyone took off their old smelly sneakers, there's a fungus among us.
Two types of sulfur fungus-The two are know as Laetiporus conifericola and Laetiporus gilbertsonni. They not good for the health of the trees.
It's a toss-up; there seems to be a concensus here that maitake mushrooms trump trees any day. [Maitake tincture was one of the nutrients we fed our golden retriever when she was diagnosed with metastasized liver cancer, and she lasted over two years post-diagnosis—probably because she didn't get chemo or radiation.]
Can we harvest them and sautee them up?
These are chicken mushrooms, and some of the best-looking ones I've ever seen if the photo is accurate. Someone should harvest them and enjoy!
