As previously noted here, a new cafe, barber and bar concept is in the works for 137 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.
Over the weekend, several EVG readers noted that the space was open for business...
The cafe will be serving coffee and tea as well as a several menu items at breakfast (avocado toast, for example), lunch and dinner. You can find their menu here. They also have a beer-wine license.
The cafe hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; until 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The hours Saturday and Sunday are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The barber hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. (The barber portion of the business is in the back of the storefront, and there is a wall separating this from the cafe.)
The previous tenant here, Top A Nails, moved next door to No. 139 in May.

This is such a hipster fantasy, having your beard trimmed while drinking coffee. To each his or her own but I don't see how the two mix well.
Hair paired with food and coffee just don't mix.
No prices on this menu? I can only imagine what they charge for that avocado toast....
Poked my head in Sat, exorbitant prices.
I'm starting to figure something out about millennial businesses. The owners don't really care about what they do, they just use it as an excuse to become stars on social media. That's the real business today. And that's what fills resumes. Why else would somebody think of fingernail food(Astor Place) and Coffee and Cuts? WHAT A WORLD!
By the way I'm thinking about my own assault on stardom. I'm opening a hamburger joint and toilet. No chairs just working toilets. I'm calling it... get this... In and Out! Whattaya think?! Social media will be a buzz. A star will be born!
I think 'Merica already beat you to it. They serve burgers and the place looks like a toilet.
Being enraged with chains for moving in while disparaging small businesses seems to be the MO of EV Grieve readers. Do you folks like anything other than complaining?
Guessing many of you are old-ish timers looking to "Make the EV Great Again," but come on--that's clearly not how things works. Life moves on, things change.
And supporting the small businesses that differentiate this neighborhood from say E 86th St, or at least giving them a shot (or just keeping your yaps shut if you don't have the inclination for both), seems like a better way to confront change. It's not easy to keep a small biz running here. Around Tompkins is farther away from the subway and rents are very high. These places thrive on support from the communities they serve. Starbucks or Target do not.
If we keep complaining about every damn change, and we just might get nothing but chains.
While I am all for new businesses and creative ideas, the thought of eating/drinking in a small space where hair is being cut just seems weird, gross and unsanitary to me... made even more confusing when you consider that dogs cannot go into a restaurant or bar just because making ice is considered food prep. Dogs near an enclosed ice maker sounds better to me than a buzzcutt near my coffee!
You do realise they have two separate spaces for the cafe and the barber shop right? Maybe do a little more research before complaining about something you know nothing about.
