Esquire profiles the executive chef, Nick Anderer, and provides a few more details on Martina — "a fine-casual pizzeria with a paired-down, cheaper menu, as well as service at a counter instead of table side."
To an excerpt:
With Martina, Anderer will experiment with hospitality — he wants to figure out how to toe the line between serving customers food quickly, but not making them feel like he made their meal before they walked in the door. That means snacks and drinks ready right after you order and take your buzzer.
Meatballs, Martina Mista salad, seasonal vegetable dishes (starting with zucchini), potato croquettes, etcetera.
For booze, Anderer wants to offer the same quality of craft wines and champagne as his recent spots. "So if somebody does want to go high-brow, low-brow and have a seven-dollar pizza with some awesome champagne they can do it without breaking the bank," he says. Not to mention that gelato machine, serving a basic vanilla flavor that he'll use to make desserts like affogato.

They think 7 bucks for a pizza is casual? If they want to offer affordability and casualness, just sell fucking slices at 2.00 a pop. That way people can have a decent alternative to the disgusting 2 bros.
The marketing to get frugal people to dine there seems like some of these entrepreneurs are getting a guilty conscience for the shit they are causing to places like the Stage and Cup & Saucer.
Of course they have to sell craft beers and champagne(with pizza?!) to be relevant to the revolting dominant state of faux luxury dining going on. Boy, Mario's son's tax breaks for the craft brew industry is really paying off.
More expensive Fast-food. Nothing wrong with 2 bros. Not bad for .99
I have no interest in large restaurants, they always say resort of tourist trap to me so I most likely will not go here once. Their location to borrow a term from Giovanni, is a real "Bro-deo Drive" so I assume that's the customer they will attract. Parents of NYU students visiting their kids, tourists who tend to trust pizza when they can't find a Domino's around might venture in as well. This is not an improvement from M2M but.... oh well.
Dollar pizza - da best!!!
Yuck - pizza with runny egg! It has to be scrambled or over medium / hard. The pizza dough does NOT sop up the runny egg.
Vinny Vincenz for a buck...$1.25 after midnight. Good ol' regular slice.
Ooh, more eating while standing up, just like the steak place a block west. Nothing says "good food, good times" like eating your food standing up with the hint of bum's-rush behind it. No thanks!
PS: Pizza and champagne? Bro-land food; nobody in their right mind would have that combo.
Yes to Vinny Vincenz. Decent pizza plus serving as a day shelter (sadly). Those guys work hard, support them.
Point me to the vomitarium.
Is that egg on the pizza ?
Gross.
Love pizza, but that's just disgusting. C'mon. Hurrah for the dollar slice! Down with BS 'LUX' food!
Must chime in about the egg on the pizza. If you're a runny egg fan, it's amazing (especially with a nice pecorino cheese).
2 bros is a $hit stain on the neighborhood. I really enjoy watching how long they'll leave "mozzarella" boxes sitting on the sidewalk or when they carry the tomato sauce from down the street in open buckets.
I'll take a $7 pie any day... and just to really piss all the commenters off- I order Motorino's $19 single serve pie weekly. Have a great day- whatever year you think it is EVG Commenters!

Yeah, funny; I thought I'd made a comment on this thread about a vomitorium; is there another thread about a Roman-style restaurant opening in this neighborhood?
Thank you 1:10pm ... If I were investing my time, money and working on a dream I'd specifically ask NOT to me mentioned on this blog! The blog is good, it's the fakakta commentators that I can't stand.
Cute use of vomitorium.. even though 1. you're more likely to find puke puddles in front of 2 Bros from either NYU kids or 'travelers' who have been given money by NYU kids to make themselves feel better and 2. vomitorium just means an amphitheater entrance. And just so there's no confusion-smart food does not equal bro food. Bro food has been in the neighborhood for years- its called Dallas BBQ.
1:44- perfect use of fakakta!
@1:44PM: You think this pizza place is Danny Meyer's "dream"?? Dream on! His bottom line will barely notice if this place goes under!
East Village pizza is SHIT.
Go Ben's, John's, Arturo's, and Fiore's Pizza all in Greenwich Village for better pizza.
The only thing eggs goes with is peppers if Danny there is going for an Italian thing. And I reiterate, 2 bros is vile, from the way they prepare it to the way they serve it assembly line style. They don't put enough sauce on it or let the crust brown enough. I know because being poor and working in NYC I eat that shit almost every day.
Primary De Blasio.
Everything on that pizza looks great except the egg, which is disgusting.
