Okay some people live to flame others and rub our noses in it for caring about the corporate takeover of our retail spaces. Surely when you moved here you didn't think "I hope these mom and pop stores close quickly, why should anyone make a living but stockholders of national chains". Nobody that participates in these rallies expect to stop a company like Starbucks in its tracks, the protest is to bring awareness to a larger audience which hopefully includes government officials who were elected to represent their district's voters not people living in Seattle.
Anon. 1:01, don't even waste your time with Fashion By He, who likes to play the part of the snarky contrarian on this website. I'm guessing he's also behind a lot of those anonymous posts telling anyone who disagrees with him and his vision for a fully corporate New York to move elsewhere.

thanks for you words regarding my response to "Fashion..", you are right of course but the optimist in me thinks if not he maybe someone else reading this blog who has wondered why people protest chain store openings will understand the reasoning.
Starbucks has closed tons of locations in NYC (including Manhattan) for failure to bring in business. If you're truly anti-Starbucks, don't ever shop here, and look scornfully at those who do! :-)
Maybe they won't make it! There is a very real possibility this spot will fail. Who knows?

Gross. I thought they were going to make it "fit in" with the neighborhood or whatever, and they put that fucking mall neon sign up. 1st Ave and E 3RD did a much better job at this. Corny.
This will be a new meeting spot close to Crusty Row hot water and wifi all systems go

Actually, Starbucks has not been closing lots of locations due to lack of customers. What has happened is that leases are up on their original spaces and they are moving to other, nearby locations.
Where the original spaces were on corners for visibility, they've already captured those local customers and find it unnecessary to pay the higher corner rents. The new locations are in mid-block, and since they've already earned the loyalty of the daily flow of office workers, retail shoppers, etc.,they can move without it hurting their business.
The Starbucks at 17th St & Broadway was at the end of their 10 year lease and the rent hike was more than they were willing to pay. They moved to midway between 15th & 16th St on USW and their numbers were back to usual within a week. This has happened in other neighborhoods also. If you walk around the city, you will notice more mid-block Starbucks in sites you might have missed but that the neighborhood locals know well.
So Starbucks displaced countless independent businesses on corners only to close them so they (Starbucks) could pay less rent from opening new locations in mid-blocks spaces and open the floodgates for more chain businesses like them on the corners like banks. That about right 4:24pm? Yeah, that about right. So FUCK STARBUCKS.
I loved that Ave A had no chain stores for half a mile.
I pointed this stretch out to a busfull of Texans and they literally gasped!
Don't we have a community board who is supposed to have our community at heart? Where are those people??? Time for a new board before there is nothing of our community left!!!
