EVG reader Cheyenne shared these photos from Avenue B and Ninth Street, where thieves apparently didn't bother with trying to clip a lock ... and cut the bike rack instead...

These racks should be alarmed somehow. And obviously less penetrable.
Apparently, these are easier and faster to cut than the kryptonite or asus locks.
Don't like thieves but some are clever.
Too bad the city spent money to uproot parking meters in 2011 instead of converting them into bike racks. You couldn't cut through those things. They were really perfect and they were everywhere. Taking them down instead of repurposing them for what they were used for was a big mistake.
Ingenious. A good pipe cutter will do and it doesn't even make a lot of noise at all. Dress in a hard hat, reflective orange work vest, work boots and jeans and most people will just think you are doing maintenance on the rack and walk on by you without so much as glancing your way.
The thieves around this area are relentless. This summer I constantly had to replace parts that were being picked off. I'm no longer parking my bike east of 1st Ave.
Maybe setting the bike racks into the cement then, thru a smallish hole in the top, fill the *hollow pieces of fn pipe* with cement to discourage any saw-like device being used to cut through *hollow pieces of fn pipe.*
