Sammy's Halal signage arrives at the former Polish G. I. Delicatessen

The transformation of the former Polish G. I. Delicatessen at 109 First Ave. between Seventh Street and Sixth Street is almost complete.

The awning for the new tenant, Sammy's Halal, went up on Friday. Based on the work permits, I thought it was going to be an outpost of Shawarma House. This appears to be part of the Sammy's family.

As for the late Polish G. I. Delicatessen, the Eastern European specialty foods shop closed last July after 21 years in business. Read more about that closure here.

So I guess Davos was just blowing snow when he said the store would re-open somewhere else in the neighborhood. Figured as much, but part of me had hoped.

So a Halal store can pay more than a Polish deli? We'll see long long that lasts.

David! I meant David, not Davos! #@%%&* bad eyes and auto-correct!

Damn I miss the Polish GI.

Hopefully "Sammy" knows how to cook, because he sure doesn't know how to spell - it's "Chicken" not "Chiken". Doesn't anyone use spell-check anymore?!?!

Maybe its a misspelling of Chechen. I hear that is a delicacy in Russia.

:{ What else is there to say.

Getting a little depressed at all the misspelled signage I am seeing lately. We live in the information age, information was supposed to be set free... and yet here we are in 2018 still misspelling everyday words like "chicken" on store signs.
