Dual Specialty Store is back open

Several readers, both in the comments and via email, have noted that Dual Specialty Store reopened this week at 91 First Ave. between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. (They had been closed the past week or so.)

The shop, which carries a wide variety of bulk Indian spices, herbs, groceries and beer, is open from 11 a.m to 8 p.m. daily.

And check out this photo essay of the shop via Gudrun Georges right here.

Oh thank God, I'm almost out of basmati and spices. One more errand to add to Saturday's list, but a welcome one. Thanks for this news, Grieve.

This makes me so happy! I’m almost out of a bunch of things, like bay leaves, the frozen Dal Pooris that make such great quick snacks... I was so used to their convenience, prices, amazing stock — didn’t realize how much I‘d miss them. It’s been impossible finding anything other than the most basic on Amazon Fresh for ordering online. Can’t wait to go back to Dual. Thanks for sharing this good news EVGrieve!

Hurrah! This is one of my all-time favorite shops and I made sure to stock up on necessities before they closed. I've been really worried about them, so am over the moon to see them open again.

Same. I need these little specialty shops. Dual is essential--best spices, best staples (nuts, rice, beans). I'm worried about Gizmo--any word about them? Gawd, I would hate to have to rely on chains Michael's or JoAnn Fabrics when we had an expert in the neighborhood.

This is gossip and hearsay....I was walking by maybe 4 days ago and overheard 2 ladies talking, and one told the other that the store Dual had been broken into twice from the back door. I never knew they had a backdoor but that's what the lady said.

I wanted to ask them but I felt weird and nosy and I dont know the ladies. So I just socially distanced myself down the street. It is not safe for all these stores to be left unattended for so long. They should have left a note on the door to let us know what to do or who to call in case of emergency because we were worrying and now we know bad things have happened. Kalystans left a note on their door when they were closed for 2 weeks.

@7:40 - you are correct. I live on the block and we have been broken into at least twice since March. Someone got in the front door of one of the apartment buildings and made their way to the back courtyard where they tried to burglarize the commercial units from the back. No one is around at night to notice. We're also getting packages stolen. Everyone needs to be vigilant.

So thankful! Now with the French patisserie, the Ukrainian butcher, the liquor store and Dual I have all I need.
