This parakeet has been spotted in the wilds of Tompkins Square Park

In the past week to 10 days, there have been multiple sightings of this parakeet, a mix of blues, greens and yellows, in Tompkins Square Park... the Park's budding ornithologists are unsure if the bird is someone's pet MIA ... or if its owner decided to abandon the parakeet on the way out of town...

H/T Steven!

I hope someone can corral the little guy - I'd think he'd be an easy mark for the hawks.

The parakeet will come down to the ground and feed with the pigeons. It is then that it can be caught with a net, if a home is found for it. I did this once in stuy town.

What a beautiful little bird !
Hope he finds a home before winter,
as parakeets cannot tolerate the cold or excessive heat.
I'll be happy to take him !

Ideal daytime temperatures for these birds range from 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit,
although budgies can withstand heat of up to 85 degrees
without getting uncomfortable.
These birds can handle a nighttime low of around 40 degrees.

Grieve, PLEASE keep us updated on this story if you can! Nobody likes to think of this little bird out there fending for itself in the summer heat & rain.

On a related note, there have been men with nets trying to catch pigeons in Tompkins. They are out early with a van and they take the birds to PA to use for target practice. These guys have been getting away with this crime for years, so if you see anyone with a net trying to grab pigeons, take a photo of them and their license plate and send to police and/or urban park rangers. It is illegal and cruel.

My heart is in tears for this Parakeet. I caught another budgie by the La Marina in Inwood last week. He seems old and weak. I brought him home gave him food and water and stayed in our place with my husband overnight. We were suppose to bring him to the vet the next morning but sadly he passed during the night.😭 He might be really sick or might have eaten too much. So if you are able to capture this precious budgie be easy on his food. Give only something he can consume for the day or night.

I don't believe this is true about the pigeon hunters in a van. Sounds like an urban legend to me.
