Fonda is the latest East Village restaurant to close amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The Mexican bar-restaurant at 40 Avenue B between Third Street and Fourth Street shut down after service on Sunday.
A Fonda rep shared this message with us:
Unfortunately, we are closed for good. Just like many other people in our business this crisis left us with no options! It was a very hard decision to make — especially because of our fantastic and incredible staff. We had a good 8-year run in the East Village and we are very thankful to the neighborhood.
Fonda's other locations in Chelsea and Park Slope remain open. This outpost opened in February 2012, stopping the revolving door of restaurants to come and go here.

Terrible. Grieve: it is time to bring back the countdown of empty storefronts on Av B
Sad to hear about this one. My husband and I loved Fonda and went often for date night pre-Covid.
This is sad. They had the best enchiladas in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, Poco with their boozy brunch specials is still going strong.
I loved this place. So sad.
This is super sad. Pre pandemic this was my friends go to happy hour spot. Man, I'll miss some 8 dollar nachos. Pour a good marg out. Adios fonda, que lastima.
Damm, really enjoyed this place over the years...
Does anyone know if their Park Slope location is also closing? I am so sad.
One of my favorite places, heart breaking. Loved the staff and the food.
I ordered several times during COVID.... The food is so good. This is a loss for the neighborhood. As an owner of another small business in the EV, I empathize....
RIP decent cheap margarita happy hour
I am going to miss this place so much. But I think it was a smart decision on the owner’s part. I hope they return to the neighborhood down the road when the virus is under control.
I feel for the nice workers and hope they get new jobs quickly. I will not miss having this sidewalk blocking yuppie brunch place on this corner, I must admit. I wish it was Poco that closed, though.
No! They’re open and going strong
So sad! I didn’t see this post and walked by today and looked this up. I’m glad they didn’t have to shut them all down but wish out of all of the spots they didn’t have to pick this one, Good people and yeah other places not nearly as good are still flourishing and not all practicing safety.
