There's another volunteer day in Tompkins Square Park on Saturday morning... interested residents can meet at 10 a.m. outside the Park office (over by the ping-pong table and dog run) ... the Parks Department will supply work gloves and rakes to help spread mulch and clean up some garden beds.
As previously noted, given the city's budget cuts, Johnny Young, the head gardener in Tompkins Square Park, has often been assigned to work in other areas... "leaving Tompkins vulnerable to trash and weeds," as he put it.

The cuts in staff are obvious around the park. The lack of a gardener shows - the planted areas are bare and the grassy areas have been overrun by dogs. The bathrooms are a disaster and close in the middle of the afternoon, so desperate people pee where ever. We deserve better than this.
Every department in the city had their budget slashed. Except the police department.
People are being asked to volunteer to gardening and clean the parks, volunteer to maintain the open street barriers, the trash cans are not emptied so the one on NW corner of Av B and 10th St has been taped over by neighbors, a clean up day for Avenue B happened last week because the Sanitation department budget was cut $109,000,000.
Anyway: count our family in for Saturday.
I volunteered at the Tompkins clean up last Saturday. It felt good to give back to our community!
Target Square Park. Found a jacket there a couple days ago. Thanks to whoever left it there on a hanger, free for the taking.
Will also be a great show going on that day in the park.
Just want to acknowledge that someone made the graphic and chose that nice font.
Keeping the park clean is also great. Watch out for the needles!
Hi there! I'm wondering if you have a contact for this event? I am a journalism student hoping to cover it. Thanks in advance! Lucy
