A striped awning for the Tile Bar
A new awning arrived at the Tile Bar (and sister site The Magician on Rivington) back on Thursday... a bit of a jolt for the low-key space that didn't have any visible signage previously on the northwest corner of First Avenue and Seventh Street...
I posted these pics in the EVG Instagram Stories and received more comments than any other in recent memory. A few regulars said — paraphrasing — that they don't care for the new look... two other commenters said that they didn't actually know this place was called Tile Bar...

My first reaction was also to note that I didn't know Tile Bar was the actual name. Is it? I thought they were related somehow to WXOU in the West Village, but maybe I'm thinking of another place.
That name goes back to the 80s.
I've always called it The Tile Bar, because it didn't seem to have an actual name. It's slightly disconcerting to have that name now be official.
Its official name was WCOU Radio. Maybe still is. But almost from the very beginning (1983) people called it the Tile Bar. There were some who called it the Radio Bar, but that didn't last long. It's been known as the Tile Bar pretty much ever since. The awning pretty much cements it.
Bar, Brooks Brothers, and beyond
Since the 80s I called it Radio Bar because of the clock. Iam not liking the awning.
Was cool to call it Tile Bar when it wasn't actually its name.
That awning is great (for an ice cream parlor)
I'm pretty sure legal name of this bar is WCOU Radio Bar, which was a sister bar of WXOU radio Bar on the west side (sold by the owners awhile back). It has been referred to by locals as "Tile Bar" since the mid 80's though.
