A message for the camper on 10th Street

Photos by Steven

You've likely noticed the camper that has been parked on 10th Street just east of First Avenue.

Apparently, people who live nearby have had about enough of the camper. Some messages have arrived outside (H/T simcitymayor!) ...
... and on the camper itself...

Technically, all that righting with blue is vandalism to city and private property.

There have been several of these parked long-term in the neighborhood. A couple on E4 Street where people are clearly living inside them.

Is owner just collecting ASP tickets?

This particular camper was discussed by a YouTuber 3 1/2 years ago on E 5th between 2nd and 3rd..also it should be noted that people actually rent out their crappy campers and vans parked in the EV on Airbnb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDebvRIGRpA&t=530s

Yet another example of how free parking is taken advantage of and why we should not allow people to park for free on city streets. The jeep that was on 2nd street and 1st ave all summer with a trailer behind is another good example.

they towed the air bnbs. I know it's gross when people have to live in their cars but maybe we could have a little compassion?

hashtag vanlifeEV (?)

See the state of that tire? That thing isn’t going far unless it’s towed.

A bit crass for what is really a symptom of homelessness. I sympathize with the residents, and I have my own feelings about a stretch of sidewalk near me that's a veritable valley of urine, but I'd have worse feelings about having to sleep on it...

With the printed text this could easily pass for an edgey EV art installation titled I Don't Want To See Your Dick Again. Durational art to boot. Maybe the Brant Foundation would consider this piece for an upcoming show.

Just wow... do you not understand that some people actually need a vehicle to do their gig work... to like haul things like musicians artists and contactors. Those who live here, pay taxes for, and deal with all the bs sheds and citibike take overs just so they can make a living. Sure I'll pay for parking if you make it affordable and explain why I have to raise my pricing...

I just assumed it was leftover from the Law and Order shoot.

The majority of people here don’t have cars, why should I/we be paying taxes to subsidize your free car storage? The folks who Air BnB these are just capitalizing on the free resource.

The majority of people here don’t have small children either. So, by your logic, we need far fewer playgrounds.

This is wild!

as far as i know, living in a camper parked on city streets is against the law. if the neighbors are not happy with this situation, what have they done about it, other than gripe. have they called the local precinct? 311?

And if this is correct that someone is living in this vehicle, instead of griping, how about seeing if this person could use a helping hand. Maybe this person isn’t as well off as the kids who are paying $3000 a month rent.

I know the van owner. He's a longtime east village resident (over 30 years) and native new yorker. I can vouch he would never expose himself to urinate outside the vehicle. He has a toilet inside the van. He's fallen on hard times and couldn't afford his apartment anymore. Yes he should have been more careful and moved the van minimum every 7 days. He has two part time jobs but its not enough. He tried to get a roommate situation but it was impossible since most people want roomies "like themselves" i.e. 20-somethings, not a 60 year old man.

The next time I am back in the LES I am gonna paint some nasty crap on the building next to where this unfortunate person has had to live during this pandemic. I hope the blue paint scum catches me and I can demonstrate some old skool LES squatter affection for them.

I am offering a $50 reward for anyone who drops a dime on the blue paint criminal and gets them arrested for damage to public property and also this poor person's home. This is obviouly a sick, angry, disturbed person who needs to be locked up before they use violence on anyone who is having hard financial times now.
