Reader report: USA Super Stores (U-S-A!) coming to the former Duane Reade on 3rd Avenue and 10th Street

You may have noticed the paper on the windows at the former Duane Reade by Walgreens on the SW corner of Third Avenue and 10th Street... and maybe the arrival of some boxes and what not inside ...
We've been curious what might be going in here... Record store? Zine shop? An EVG tipster shared the following: This will be the second EV location of USA Super Stores.

An outpost seemingly came out of nowhere this past November on the NW corner of Houston and Avenue D — site of a former Duane Reade by Walgreens. (There's also a USA Super Stores on the UES — AT A FORMER DUANE READE! PATTERN DETECTED.)

USA Super Stores have a little bit of everything, from groceries to housewares to clothing — all at discounted prices. ("Cozy Fuzzy Sleep Pants" — $5.99; a 4-pound bag of Domino Sugar — $2.99.)

No word on an opening date. One day it will just be open!

This Duane Reade by Walgreens on the corner of Third and 10th closed in early March 2020 ... several years after expanding and gobbling up several small storefronts, forcing Excel Art and Framing Store and East Village Cheese (which was never the same) to relocate.

Anyone have intel on the 18th and 3rd avenue former Duane Reade? I've been spying some construction in there the past few weeks but don't see any information on public records.

that sidewalk shed has been up forever and a day but great, another dollar store

I have never heard of USA Super Stores until now. Sounds like a Dollar General-esque chain business. I tried looking them up online to see what they're all about, but their name is too generic to render useful results.

mmm now I’m thinking about the delicious hickory smoked tuna salad and fantastic olives and cheeses that the original East Village Cheese used to sell, when they changed owners it just wasn’t the same quality

Wow, how déclassé can we get? I guess shopping around here is dumbing itself down to bro level.

There is almost no real shopping in this area anymore.
Luckily we still have a Rite Aid.

Glad there will be some sort of store !
It's kind of a hopeful sign that
some business wants to open around here
besides restaurants.

Why all this love for the old Cheese shop? A lot of their stuff was old and rotting. When they changed hands they went even further down hill.

Bros dont shop here. Long time low income residents shop here.

Kind of reminds me of Woolworth's (which is not a bad thing now that K-Mart is gone).

Amazing how everyone is complaining about a shop that appears to be offering a variety of goods that people actually use regularly. Can't please anyone in this comment section.

I look forward to the day that all the whiners here open their niche stores serving whatever it is that is the only acceptable thing to exist in the East Village.

I, on the other hand, will celebrate one less vacant storefront and wish them the best.

lots of people in the neighborhood who need a store like this. at least from the sound of it - have never been in one of these stores so we shall see. i love dollar stores for giftwrap, holiday gear, kids stuff, etc, so will be checking it out when it opens!

Speaking of former drug store locations--the Walgreens at the corner of 4th Ave and 14 St. looks like it's closing down. Anyone know the story there? Or any idea what might go into that space?

With the Duane Reade next to Nordstrom Rack 20 seconds away it was clear that one of the stores will not survive.

Could be an upscale 99 Cent store.

I made a pneumonia vaccine reservation for tomorrow at the 10th and 4th Walgreen's on their website, when I got the confirmation it said, "Thank you for making an appointment at Duane Reade" - DR taking over the space, maybe?

@6:19PM: Yes, Walgreen's at 4th and 14th IS definitely closing.

@9:25 Walgreens bought the Duane Reade chain several years ago. All Duane Reade stores are actually "Duane Reade by Walgreens" if you look at your prescriptions or receipts, so DR is not taking over from Walgreens. Walgreens and DR are the same company.

Hey, shades of the old Woolworth? Maybe. Let's give it a chance. I miss Kmart.
