A Saturday night Friday-at-5 special edition... former East Village resident Cat Power (aka Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshal) released this track, "Manhattan," on her 2012 record Sun ... an instantly great song that some saw as "a celebration and elegy at once."
Cat Power is the special guest on the Modest Mouse-Pixies bill this summer ... which includes two sold-out nights this Monday and Tuesday at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport.

Before Chan got famous she rented a room in my and Radical Artist Seth T.'s E. 3rd St. apartment. Having a cheap room in the East Village during that period of time I think played a role in her success. Once at around 4 in the morning I went out of my room to use the bathroom and Chan and other musicians were sitting in the hallway splitting up cash from a gig. One thing about living in the neighborhood back then was that you never knew who might get famous in the future anything was possible. I seem to remember that I took some photos of the money counting scene [ I think it included some Sonic Youth peeps ] and the negs are in my photo archive at NYU Library.
