My brother's family just received over a foot of snow at their Cottonwood Canyon home in SLC Utah, which is near the ski resorts where many have closed due to the significant amount. They are expected to receive another foot of snow next week. I've been in NYC for 24 years. Can you imagine if that happened here? When I first moved to Manhattan from LA, winter always not only delivered freezing temperatures, but consistent snow fall throughout the season. The most memorable blizzard with a lot of snow I am sure many of you remember here was in January of 2016. The city was silent. It was cold and awfully messy, but so beautiful. My birthday is in early February. As someone who loves winter, I hope Mother Nature will work her charm and give us a good snow day as a gift :)
The climate has changed. Mid 40s in January makes July ominous. It's past time to start leaning on the city to prepare for mitigating extreme heat. Building codes. Paint those roofs white. Emergency plans for taking the strain off the power grid during days and weeks when air conditioning is what's keeping us alive. Hopefully not this year. Or next. Or next.
I doubt any of this will happen before a tragic catastrophe. New York City only does long term planning when the graft aligns.
