EVG's Stacie Joy spotted Jason Birchard, the third generation owner of Veselka, today before a screening of the documentary "Veselka: The Rainbow on the Corner at the Center of the World" at the Village East by Angelika.
The compassionate and compelling film will be playing all week at the theater on Second Avenue and 12th Street. (Showtimes

I saw the film this afternoon with the Q & A featuring Jason, dad Tom, Veselka staffer Dima, and the director, Michael Fiore. The full house and questions from an engaged audience shows the importance of Veselka in the East Village community for 70 years and especially now following Russia's criminal invasion of Ukraine. Highly recommended!
I look forward to seeing the movie. Veselka family have been my friends for many years. They are good people, so I'm very happy for the Documentary movie! They always give back to our community and support different causes. They have been big supporters for the people in Ukraine during the war. They also support local artist as myself, Jason bought a few small war inspired Ukraine paintings early on when the war started. And I recently became inspired again, I've created a few very cool Street signs for Jason. Today is delivery day. Congratulations VESELKA! Thanks EV Grieve and Stacie Joy.
Will be there tonight! Looking forward to seeing a film about a neighborhood institution in the very neighborhood of which it was institutionalized!
Ukrainians turned this neighborhood from a crime ridden ghetto to a place where alternative lifestyles were welcomed and artists flourished. Unfortunately with the current mob in Gracie Mansion and greedy landlords, things are reverting back to the crime ridden 70's.
