3 new bakeries-cafes have opened in the East Village

Here's a quick look at three new bakery-cafe options in the East Village...

Sweet Cake, 215 First Ave., just south of 13th Street.

The Flushing-based bakery and cafe, which serves coffee, matcha drinks, and Asian-style desserts, is now in service between 12th Street and 13th Street. (Previously.)

Oasis Cafe, 198 Avenue A between 12th Street and 13th Street.

The bakery-dessert shop, which started in Flushing, is now in soft-open mode. The brand also has locations in Astoria and Midtown, and it ships its sweets, such as eclairs, cheesecake, and cookies, nationwide. (Previously.)
Red Beard Coffee & Bakery, 194 First Ave. between 11th Street and 12th Street

Red Beard debuted on Saturday. This sibling to the Lazy Llama on First Street serves espresso via Ioannis Coffee Chef and offers freshly baked bread, pastries, and several sandwich options. Hours: Daily from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (Previously.)

I'm all for new openings, but man are there a lot of bakeries now in the area. Does the entire neighborhood have diabetes or something? It feels like I'm living in a giant candy shop that caters to people with arrested development...

Well, it's better than a smoke shop. Wish they had better outdoor seating though. People watching is half the fun here.

It's interesting to note the waves of businesses we've had over the years:
Pizza
Burgers
Ramen
Bubble Tea
Baked goods
Tacos
One of each of these things would be perfect.

I miss the middle eastern takeout spots we used to enjoy here, now almost all gone.

The folks at Oasis were handing out free samples Sunday and I'm glad to have them, much better than an empty store or smoke & vape jobs.

I’m happy it’s not another smoke shop or outdoor bar with bumping music but wish some retail stores would come back! There needs to be incentives for retail right now. Oh…I can’t believe people are paying $6 for one coffee. SMH. No wonder they keep opening up cafes.

Bakeries and Candy Shops are two completely different things.

Thanks for the feature! I’m helping out at Red Beard Coffee and it’s been great since they opened last week. Good selection of pastries and they have their own line of cold pressed juices made in house too. Friendly people and has a nice indoor/outdoor seating area as well.

Looks like a great selection of places to visit.

The ship sailed on retail stores long ago, and they're not coming back, ever.
$6 for a good coffee ain't that expensive nowadays. Time to adjust to new realities.

I'm addicted to baked goods and delighted that bakeries seem to be clustering in the Upper East Village.

I just politely ask that they remember their vegan customers, unlike some delusionally snooty local bakeries I could name (*coughs in faux French*). Otherwise I'll keep giving all my $$$ to Confectionery! on 9th (I might do that anyway).
