Baseball bats, fisticuffs and broken windows: A bonkers fight escalates as man drives car onto the sidewalk on 3rd Avenue

East Village resident Ethan Minsker was out walking his dog this morning at 8:30 when he came across a fight in progress on Third Avenue between 12th Street and 13th Street.

"Two men fighting over some kind of car thing," he wrote in an Instagram post

Minsker provided a narrative to the video below:

"The guy in the purple took out a baseball bat and beat the other guy on the street. The guy who got beaten with the baseball bat jumped in the man's car, drove it on the sidewalk and messed it up. Then he got pulled out of his car and retreated to his own car. And the guy broke the side window."

The fight happened very quickly, Minsker said, and the police were not yet on the scene during this video... but several other bystanders were shooting video as well...

On my way to work this morning I saw this car on the sidewalk with a police officer looking into it and thought to myself, What the hell happened? And then I come here and you have the whole story. You're amazing EV Grieve!

So to sum up: more low-value males having violent emotional outbursts in public

Guess they don't get enough love at home.

They should run for office.

That one guy deserves some kind of punishment pairing that purple shirt with a tan vest!

I was thinking just the opposite, his taste in fashion is way better than the other guy's. But all in all, they both had put much thought to their fighting attire, and so I salute them for that.

Definitely a Darren Aronofsky set!

Sign of the times: a half dozen people filming, no one tries to break it up. Gotta love it.

You can clearly see at least two guys tried to intervene but stayed back to avoid being run over. These days you can't even try to be a good Samaritan without risking your own life, so I don't blame people for hesitating to get in between an already clearly heated to the point of unhinged argument.

At least this didn’t happen in the bike lane. God forbid!

I’m sure you would have tried breaking it up right

It will be nice to give some context regarding the vehicle involved: South Carolina Plates although he's been living in the city since (at least 2021). More than $2000 unpaid fines ($350 and up and your vehicle can be impounded). This is all just a testament for the lack of any enforcemnet in this city).

Damn. What is wrong with people? Why are grown ass middle aged men acting like a pair of wild animals?

This is first class reporting. Thank you Grieve!
I always get uneasy watching conflicts like this. I wonder - maybe I missed something - what was the initial issue??

Why is it that not a single one of you MFers who were standing around didn't pick up the bat and throw in down a storm drain so no one could get hurt any worse?

Two meatheads trying to tear each other a new asshole on Third Ave at 8 o'clock in the morning. The rage against the machine ending was priceless.

Thank you for that link! I also looked up the other driver and he’s also got quite the moving violation and parking record. There was even a yellow box at the top of the search results that warned: “ Under theDangerous Vehicle Abatement Act this vehicle could be booted or impounded due to its 44 school zone speed camera violations (>= 15/year) from 03/01/2023 to 02/29/2024.” yikes

I broke up a fight once but the cops showed up during the fight and I got a situation as well and was told to tell it to a judge. I had to waste a vacation day to go to court. Was told not to get involved and contact the police if the situation happens again

My thought also

At the very least his tan colored shitkickers should be banned in public.

Both of these people should not be driving cars in this city

Potential retaliation , actual escalation, for throwing his bat down a storm drain, also being legally held accountable for other people’s property. No good deed goes unpunished with that type of intervention. Video was the actual safest form of intervention.

Coulda woulda shoulda - Monday Morning Quarterbacks. Easy to criticize but when you are in the midst of a violent situation self preservation should be your first concern.

Why do you wonder? It's road rage. There's no logic to it. One could have looked at the other one the "wrong" way and his little feelings got hurt.

A video of the situation can actually help you out a lot as a victim, especially if the other guy assaults you or flees the scene
