We have more details about the incoming coffee-and-matcha shop at 64 Avenue A: It will be called Lucky Cafe.
The owner is East Village resident and artist James Phillips (below). Some readers may recognize Phillips from his skateboard artwork, which he has displayed on the SE corner of Second Avenue at Seventh Street.
Lucky Cafe is aiming for a soft opening in mid-March. The space is coming together with a green, cream and brown palette, and bench seating. Phillips also designed and made the floor tiles.
This will be the latest addition to the block-long Untitled building between Fourth Street and Fifth Street. Other new retail tenants here are Barryville General and B&H Barber Shop.

I am very excited for a new coffee shop, but isn't there a Lucky Bar on Ave B?
Yes indeed there is. Certainly we wish the young man luck with his new venture but his naming choice does seem unfortunate given the very same neighborhood has a well established venue who got there first.
Yeah. Bummer about the name.
So much of this lately. Mary’s is another egregious example considering how long Mary O’s has been around.
It’s odd to have any proprietary expectations about “Mary” or “lucky”
What’s next, Mike, Kate, Sweet, Happy, being off limits for a business name?
I’m not taking my kid to a bar but I am to a cafe. That’s all you need to differentiate if you’ve decided to use an extremely basic simple name.
Now if there was xylophone bar …and then unrelated xylophone cafe opened, sure that would raise eyebrows.
What’s weird to me are two unrelated bars in the neighborhood named one and one & the new one4one. Then there’s also midtown bar oneonefour and event space onefourone.
So excited to try this awesome brew!
Never been a big coffee drinker but I have a sneaky feeling this place is gonna tickle my fancy
Coming to NY just to get some Lucky coffee
I’m sorry to say i did not have a good experience. I’m writing this with hope that they will figure out how to improve because I’d love to have a good cafe on that block. The food was stale, the owner couldn’t even identify what they had. The coffee tasted like hot water, he was too distracted to provide milk …. There are board games but the tables are too small for the games. Lots of time
Spent on the aesthetics but not much effort on the food, drink. Similar problem to the old cafe that was a couple doors down that closed last year. I hope he figures out that people actually want quality food and drink before he loses all his money and the person working there has to know how to serve people.
