The 9th Precinct is hosting the annual Night Out Against Crime community event today on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue from 3-7 p.m.
The flyer mentions a bounce house... but no word of the officer on stilts (who, as I recall, was MIA last year).
As a reminder, the 9th Precinct Community Council meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. So that would be tomorrow (May 16!).
The meetings take place at the 9th Precinct, 321 E. Fifth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
This is an opportunity for residents to address any concerns (noise complaints?) and ask 9th Precinct officials for their input on recent crime statistics.
If you're planning ahead, then note that the Community Council does not meet in July and August, per Neil Barsky, Council president.
The 9th Precinct is hosting a blood drive tomorrow at the station house on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue. (Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)
As Bedford + Bowery noted, the blood drive is in honor of Bianca Bennett. The off-duty rookie officer died in a car crash driven by a fellow cop in the Bronx on Feb. 1. Bennett, 27, had been stationed at the 9th Precinct.
Officer Bianca Bennett, who worked at the 9th Precinct on Fifth Street, died in a single-car crash in the Bronx on Wednesday night, according to published reports. She was 27.
Sources say Bennett was a passenger in a red Dodge Durango driven by a fellow off-duty officer, who lost control and ran off the roadway. The SUV flipped and burst into flames.
The other officer reportedly sustained trauma and burns to both of his legs. He remains in critical condition at Jacobi Hospital.
The rookie officer was set to marry her high school sweetheart in April.
Thank You everyone for the outpouring of support during this difficult time as we prepare to say goodbye to a true shining star #NYPDpic.twitter.com/Wr1xpgZ3Qh

On my ride to work I see the police light up a woman who biked past the crosswalk to the corner. They gave her a red light ticket even though she did not cross through the intersection.

The precinct’s crime rate is down 27 percent over all for the month. Specifically, robberies are down 57 percent, felony assaults are down 46 percent, burglaries are down 25 percent, and grand larceny is down 24 percent. The only spike, said Venice, was stolen vehicles — five this month, compared with only one during the previous month. The precinct’s crime rate is down 5 percent over all for the year.
Most of the crimes in the precinct have been grand larceny — the result of people leaving their property (often credit cards) somewhere and it being stolen.
Meanwhile, the NYPD announced earlier this week the launch of CompStat 2.0, "a newly public, online version of the data tool that the department has used since 1990 to map crime statistics by precinct," per Gothamist.
A lot of happy faces (though not everyonewas happy!).
And at first glance, we thought Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer might be leading the crowd in xmas carols ... nope – she was just thanking the 9th Precinct...
The 9th Precinct is hosting its annual children's holiday party today on East Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue. As the flyer shows, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there. Not sure about Officer Tubbs. The festivities last from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Meanwhile, the 9th Precinct has been getting into the holiday spirit as well inside the station house ...
We heard about one topic that residents will address during tonight's meeting. According to the East Fifth Street Block Association, there have been increasing complaints from residents on Second Avenue and on the southeast side of East Sixth Street and the northeast side of East Fifth Street who "are suffering from noisy, late outdoor parties."
Specifically:
"There was one in the yard of 237 E. 5th St. on Saturday and neighbors from various abutting buildings could be seen hanging out of their window entreating the revelers to quiet down. Police were called and did not show up ... the whole thing finally was shut down when someone hosed the party down."
The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m., is at the 9th Precinct, 321 E. Fifth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
The annual National Night Out Against Crime happens today from 3-8 outside the 9th Precinct on East Fifth Street … there will be games for kids (we heard something about a dunking booth) and food … and hopefully an appearance by the original patrol tower — the officer on stilts…
Multiple readers have told us that East Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue has been closed since this morning. Only residents are allowed onto the block.
Word on the street is that there was some kind of threat made against the 9th Precinct, which sits mid-block.
That'a all we've heard at the moment.
The NYPD and other police departments in the United States and elsewhere have reportedly been on alert since an ISIS threat from last September recently resurfaced.
The mother of Jamie Pugh, the 20-year-old suspect in the beating death of 68-year-old Ruan Wen Hui, told DNAinfo today that someone slipped the club-drug Molly into his drink last Friday evening while partying.
"He wasn't in his right state of mind," Charlotte Pugh-Douglas said before her son's arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court today.
Police arrested Pugh early yesterday morning. He has reportedly been charged with second-degree murder, robbery and assault.
Per the report in DNAinfo:
Pugh didn’t even know about the attack until one of his friends showed him the chilling surveillance footage over the weekend and said the attacker looked like him.
"When he saw the video, it killed him inside. It hurt him. He was crying all weekend. He knows it's him. He just didn't remember," Pugh-Douglas said.
Hui, a retired garment worker who lived on Avenue C and East Seventh Street with his wife, died from his injuries Saturday night. He had just dropped off his two granddaughters after a trip to a nearby playground when the attack occurred.
Police have said that it was an attempted robbery. Pugh has prior arrests for robbery and drugs, according to published reports.

CBS New York reports that a judge ordered Pugh to be held without bail.
Per CBS:
As the victim lay dying on the sidewalk, Pugh allegedly continued down the street and yelled, “This is my block,” police said.

The map sticks to the major New York State felonies: Murder and Non-Negligent Manslaughter, Rape, Robbery, Felonious Assault, Burglary, Grand Larceny and Grand Larceny Motor Vehicle. Though the site uses data available on the NYPD website, it was developed by Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
