Brodo debuts on Astor Place this week

The Brodo bone-broth kiosk will have a soft opening today on Astor Place near the uptown 6 stop ... Owner Marco Canora told me they'd be open then "in earnest" tomorrow.

Canora debuted a Brodo to-go window on the First Avenue side of Hearth back in 2014the start of what became a nationwide bone-broth trend. The Astor Place kiosk makes the fifth Brodo outpost in the city.

Brodo temporarily takes the place of La Newyorkina for the early part of 2019. La Newyorkina, which sells Mexican palettas and ices, is expected to return this summer.

Brodo opening a bone-broth outpost on Astor Place

The Brodo kiosk has arrived on Astor Place near the uptown 6 stop (thanks to Vinny & O for the photos)...

Marco Canora opened a Brodo to-go window on the First Avenue side of Hearth back in 2014... and bone broth became a thing, with the arrival of three more Brodo outposts (four with Astor Place), as well as a nationwide delivery service.

In an email, Canora told me that the Astor Place outpost is expected to open the last week of January.

Brodo is taking the place of the La Newyorkina kiosk on the north plaza for the winter season. La Newyorkina, which sells Mexican palettas and ices, returns this summer.

People apparently are enjoying their bone broth to go on 1st Avenue

[EVG file photo]

Hearth chef/owner Marco Canora added a new to-go window (door?) on the First Avenue side of the restaurant back on Nov. 3.

And people seem to like his bone broth and soups, which cost between $4 and $9. Crain's reports that the to-go business, called Brodo (Italian for broth), is attracting 200 customers a day.

Eater notes that the demand is such that Canora had to install a second stove for Brodo inside Hearth at East 12th Street.

Back to Crain's:

Mr. Canora said his new concept comes as the result of personal health issues, the rising popularity of broth and a desire to utilize Hearth's unused space. After January, he hopes to add vegetarian and seafood broths. He also plans to operate Brodo year-round. For the summer, he's considering serving refreshments such as tomato juice as well as a cucumber-fennel concoction, both with broth ice cubes.

Soup and broth to go starting today at Brodo on 1st Avenue

Hearth chef Marco Canora has added a new to-go window (door?) on the First Avenue side of the restaurant.

And starting today, you can get broth and soup at Brodo (Italian for broth) ...

Here's the menu (you can click on the image for the details) …

Canora talked with New York magazine/Grub Street, who first reported on Brodo, about how all this came about:

“Twenty years of eating bread, drinking booze, smoking cigarettes, and working in kitchens really fucked me up in a big way.”

Until quite recently, you see, Canora was not the epitome of good health. He’d been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, he was suffering from gout, his cholesterol was through the roof, and he was thirty pounds overweight. Now, at 45, having made some major changes in his diet, he says he’s in the best shape of his life. And he attributes not a small part of this reversal of fortune to daily doses of the broth he’s always made as a base for Hearth’s soups and stocks.

Hearth is located at 403 E. 12th St.
