A reader passed along an item of interest... During the weekend, "workers installed this rather odd 'art' installation on the Cooper Square Hotel's outdoor patio, otherwise unused during the cold weather months."
So, what is it?
The reader has a few (classic) guesses:
"A bicycle frame hung in effigy, perhaps a driver's road rage fantasy revenge for the perceived insult of bicycle lane proliferation. The desk chair swing set is more mysterious still: dreams of lost childhood, while trapped in corporate cubicles? Finally the roped-off area suggests either a crime scene or the intentionally exclusive velvet ropes (without the velvet, since times are hard) of the nightlife scene, a barrier which non-model females and non-celebrity males can only pass by offering a credit card; it's hard to say which interpretation is more depressing."

Before the Cooper Square Hotel
Speaking of 35 Cooper Square... the building, on the far left in the photo below, is the sole survivor here between Fifth Street and Sixth Street... the photo by rollingrck (via Flickr) was taken on Dec. 12, 2004 ...

This morning outside the Cooper Square Hotel
Regardless if this had anything to do with the hotel... management must have loved an exterminator's truck parked near the entrance...

Cooper Square Hotel still tagged
The Cooper Square Hotel fence was tagged Friday night/Saturday morning...
Yesterday!
I was actually a little surprised to see the tag still there today...
Back in May, the Cooper Hotel staff quickly removed a tag... Or is this part of the hotel's new art installation?

Tagging the Cooper Square Hotel fence
Last time someone tagged the hotel fence, the anti-graffiti team was on the scene in no time.

Posts that I never got around to posting in 2010: Cooper Square Hotel Guests
Written but never posted on July 18...
I walked by the Cooper Square Hotel the other morning ... and the two people in the attached photo walked out the front doors...
A bellhop type held the door open for them and bid the couple farewell...then he looked at his co-worker and they both started snickering... Maybe the laughter had nothing to do with the couple. Or, more likely, the Cooper Square Hotel continues to act like a high school bully....

Cooper Square Hotel ready for chilly reception
Winterizing at the Coop.
Meanwhile, as Jeremiah reported on Friday, there's rumor that the SoHo Grand Hotel team has bought the troubled Cooper Square Hotel.

No sign of development sign on empty Cooper Square lot
Back in August, the development sign went up on the empty lot at Sixth Street and Cooper Square.... Never did see a listing for it at the Massey Knakal site.
Anyway, as of this week, the sign is gone...
Perhaps the lot has already been sold (doubtful) ... or maybe a new, bigger sign is going up? Regardless, we're curious about this sign development....

Doom and doomer: More of Cooper Square primed for development
As you can see, a brand-new "For Sale" sign has been hoisted up on the empty lot at Sixth Street and Cooper Square.... the sign just went up, and there's no listing for it just yet at the Massey Knakal site. Add this to the "doomed corners" list.

Why you might hear a tape-bow violin coming from the Cooper Square Hotel penthouse tonight
An EV Grieve reader passed this along...
On June 16, there will be a listening party for Laurie Anderson's HOMELAND, her first studio album in 10 years. Nonesuch releases it June 22. This will take place in the Penthouse of the Cooper Square Hotel, as part of the Annie
O Music Series. Laurie will briefly perform.
Anyway, you'll see plenty more of Anderson this summer, like this Saturday with Lou Reed at the Coney Island Mermaind Parade... and July 14 on Letterman...

New Cooper Square Hotel fence tagged
On Wednesday, workers finished putting in the Popsicle fence at the Cooper Square Hotel... a tempting canvas for street artists... and sure enough, in what will be the first of many, I imagine... someone tagged the fence last night... and thanks to EV Grieve reader Ryan for snapping this shot early this morning of the Cooper Square Hotel Anti-Graffiti Team going into action...
I took this shot a little later...
...and just up the way at the new Cooper Union academic building...
Anyway, why did the Coop Hotel clean the tag? I thought they wanted to "fit in with the edgy local art scene?"

Cooper Square Hotel finishes building fence that looks just as out of place as the hotel
As I noted yesterday, workers were fencing in the garden spot along East Fifth Street outside the Cooper Square Hotel... How many Popsicle sticks were used to make this?
However, as you can see, the Coopsters left a slot in the Popsicle sticks for any fancy car parties they may have this summer...
Previously on EV Grieve:
Residents discuss the problems created by the Cooper Square Hotel: Meanwhile, across the street, a party for a sports car

Cooper Square Hotel fencing in its garden
Oh, and those poor shrubs are getting uprooted again...
Suppose this will help keep out snoopy neighbors (and bloggers!) ... and inspire some local graffiti artists...

That "Lewd Loud Sound" for the Cooper Square Hotel
With the nice weather last night, apparently some Cooper Square Hotel guests got a little raucous.
Which, perhaps, inspired one of the greatest e-mails ever:
Lewd Loud Sound From [XXX] E 5th Street for balcony users at Cooper Square Hotel. Thought you'd be interested.
Yes I am!

Shepard Fairey's Cooper Square Hotel mural tagged too
After seeing photos of the epic bombing of Shepard Fairey's Bowery/Houston mural this past weekend, a reader said that he also noticed a small tag on Shep's Cooper Square Hotel work ...
... by the time we stopped by, the small tag had been wiped mostly clean... but you can still see the outline...
...this first attempt may just be the start of Open Season here too...
