Wow, that was fast. This is all that's left of 532 E. Fifth St.

Demolition on East Fifth Street
Given the small parcels of open space on either side of 532 E. Fifth St., this four-story house was a rarity...which, of course, made it an endandgered species in this era of build-a-condo-on-every-piece-of-open-space development. It has been a four-unit apartment building. (As of last fall, a three-bedroom apartment was going for $3,500.)
Sure enough, the building is now being demolished. Don't know what's going in the space just yet, but the rumor among some locals is, of course, a condo.

Those locksmith guys will even leave a card on a building being demolished.
One of the condo-rumor spreaders frets that such change will usher in even further development (even in this economy) on this little stretch of the East Village.

The renovation of St. Brigid's is under way; permit to demolish the church has been removed
You may remember that, despite the $20 million anonymous donation to save St. Brigid's on Avenue B and Eighth Street, the Archdiocese of New York still had the demolition permits on file as of September. No more. Edwin Torres, chairman of the committee to Save St. Brigid's, told his supporters last month that the permits had been withdrawn. Phew. Meanwhile, the renovation begins/continues. We've seen several workers there during recent walks by the 160-year-old church.
Torres said that the Archdiocese has retained architects and other professionals necessary for the renovation. The first step, though: asbestos removal. No word on how long this could take...Aug. 15, 2009?

Historic church on Second Street plans its ruin
Rob at Save the Lower East Side! brings us some troubling news on the development front for the neighborhood. Among the approved projects: The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection and Chapel of St. Innocent of Irkutsk on Second Street is planning to add eight residential stories to its current 60-foot height. WTF?

Noise, then darkness
Stevengyang posted this video on YouTube titled "235 East 13th Street." Here's the description:
Ugh. What a nightmare. Mrs. Grieve and I moved out of an apartment on the LES around the time when rumors were circulating that the empty lot next door was becoming a six-story building with retail on the ground level. Sure enough, there's now a spiffy new apartment building on that space. We had five windows in that apartment, including three that faced the lot. The apartment was dingy as it was -- can't imagine what it would be like now.
Perhaps developers should be sentenced to live in apartments next to their construction zones to experience all this firsthand.

The dog days of summer
This is a video of the construction that has gone on around us over the past year. The construction has turned our bedroom window into a concrete wall. The wall is so close we can touch it. At then end you see how dark the room is even at 3 pm during the day. At least its not as loud anymore.

Activity at the former site of A. Fontana Shoe Repair
What's going on at the former location of the A. Fontana Shoe Repair on 10th Street past Second Avenue? The shop, there for 45 years, closed in late February. I didn't spot any workers or construction permits when I walked by...And there will be no sarcastic asides about bank branches, yogurt shops or Duane Reades. Anything is possible.
If you're new to this...Jeremiah has provided thoughtful coverage of Fontana's this past year.

At the former site of the Miracle Grill garden
In a post last month, I wondered what was happening at 92 E. 7th St., in what used to be the garden dining area of the Miracle Grill.
Jeremiah has the not-so-surprising answer at Curbed, where he's a guest editor this week. (Hint: it has six stories and eight units....the new condo, not Jeremiah!)

The dog days of summer
This past weekend, I walked by that new apartment building going up on 13th Street near Third Avenue. It was boarded up; no activity going on...
After seeing the attack-dog sign, I knocked on the plywood. Made some noise. Threw a rock. No barking. Nothing. Perhaps it was the dog's day off. Or, given the economy, maybe one attack dog has to work several different sites during the weekend. Or, given that it was about 500 degrees out, and there was no one around to give the dog fresh water...Or maybe there never has been a dog on site...

Another day, another direction
Is it me, or is that crane hovering over Cooper Union move around by the minute? Particularly on weekends, when no one is working...
See some of my previous photos of the crane here.

So what's all this about?
At 92 E. 7th Street, just east of First Avenue. Tearing up what used to be the garden dining space of Imagine and, before that, the Miracle Grill.

Just asking
Once again, another tragedy. Does this crane look secure? Just asking. Can't tell. Too many of them around town.

14th Street dies a little more
The scaffolding went up April 22...and the building started to come down last week.
From an April 22 post of mine:
Meanwhile, came to the corner of 14th Street and Third Avenue. Scaffolding! And that wasn't there when I passed by Sunday. Uh-oh. This doesn't look good. Housing and a bank? [Housing? Ha! That sounds affordable. No, make this overpriced condos.]
