H Mart is expanding on 3rd Avenue

A well-placed source tells us that H Mart is expanding its footprint on Third Avenue, moving into the vacant corner space at 10th Street.

Renovations are currently underway inside the storefront. We've reached out to H Mart for more information and will keep you updated as the work progresses.

The corner spot became available when Lois Cleaners recently moved a block north between 11th Street and 12th Street.

The Asian-American supermarket opened here in June 2019.

With this addition, H Mart will be the sole retail client in the block-long base of NYU's Alumni Hall.

Weekend recap: H Mart opened! H Mart opened!

ICYMI: The H Mart opened Saturday morning over on Third Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street.

And here are the hours for the Korean supermarket chain, which features an array of hard-to-find specialty items...

Saturday's post has some interior shots and reader comments.

H Mart is open! H Mart is open!

The H Mart on Third Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street opened its doors today around noon (H/T Steven!)...

And there's an unconfirmed report that @sukebornloose was first in line...

This location of the Asian-American grocery will also carry BBQ chicken...

And the hours of operation...

More, much more, later... and previously.

We first spotted the branding for the Asian-American supermarket here last August. This is the third H Mart in Manhattan (the others are on West 32nd Street and Broadway on the Upper West Side). Overall, H Mart, based in Lyndhurst, N.J., has more than 70 outposts in the United States and Canada.

Workers combined four retail spaces on this block in the base of NYU's Alumni Hall to fit this H Mart — the former Birdbath and Citi Habitats office (both of those businesses left in the summer of 2014 ... as well as a Subway (sandwich shop) and Saint's Alp Teahouse.

[Updated] H Mart won't open now until June 3

Updated June 3: The market is still not open. A worker at the store said it might be another week.

The H Mart was all ready to open this week here on Third Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street.

However, a manager at the Asian-American supermarket tells EVG correspondent Steven that they are still waiting for an inspection via the Department of Buildings, and the opening has been pushed back now to June 3. Workers are transporting all the fresh produce to the other NYC locations.

H Mart will open very, very soon on 3rd Avenue

The H Mart is looking very close to opening here in the retail space of NYU's Alumni Hall on Third Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street.

How close?

An H Mart manager told EVG correspondent Steven that they could open as soon as today, though more likely a little later this week. Updated: It's now June 3.

When the door is open at the incoming H Mart

In this week's episode of H Mart is coming soon, EVG correspondent Steven takes a look to see how interior renovations are progressing here along Third Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street...

It appears that the H Mart will take four of the six retails spots here in the base of NYU's Alumni Hall ...

At least two of those retail spots — Birdbath and Citi Habitats — have been empty for nearly five years. The other two empty spots once belonged to a Subway (sandwich shop) and Saint's Alp Teahouse.

We first spotted the branding for H Mart here last August. Still no exact opening date for the specialty Asian-American grocery chain, based in Lyndhurst, N.J.

A reminder that H Mart is coming to 3rd Avenue

We've been waiting for word of H Mart's arrival in the long-vacant shops along the base of NYU's Alumni Hall on Third Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street.

There's now a new "coming soon" banner for the Asian-American supermarket on display...

While we're over here... the departure date for Metropolis Vintage has been pushed back from April 1 to May 1...

As we first reported on Jan. 2, Metropolis is moving to a larger space at 803 Broadway near 11th Street after 23 years at 43 Third Ave.

Signs of new businesses on 3rd Avenue, and an H Mart update

[Dec. 7]

Workers have been refurbishing the space for storefront signage in the long-vacant shops along the base of NYU's Alumni Hall on Third Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street...

Not sure if this means some new businesses are in the works for this block. There is, however, one new merchant on the way. As we first reported in August, branding for H Mart, an Asian-American supermarket chain based in Lyndhurst, N.J., arrived in the front window of the former Birdbath bakery and Citi Habitats office next door.

H Mart reps said that they do not have a tentative opening date for the East Village at this time. This will be the third H Mart in Manhattan (the others are on West 32nd Street and Broadway on the Upper West Side). Overall H Mart has more than 70 outposts in the United States and Canada.

H Mart coming to 3rd Avenue in base of NYU's Alumni Hall

H Mart, an Asian-American supermarket chain based in Lyndhurst, N.J., is opening an outpost on Third Avenue at Ninth Street in the long-vacant retail space of NYU's Alumni Hall. (H/T Upper West Sider!)

Signage arrived this week in the front window of the former Birdbath space and Citi Habitats office next door. (Both of these businesses left in the summer of 2014, and have sat empty ever since.)

Based on the work permits filed with the DOB, the market will encompass at least 3,800 square feet.

Not sure how much space that means along these empty storefronts...

Most of these spaces have been vacant now three to four years.

When M2M closed on Third Avenue and 11th Street in February 2017, the owners of the Asian market posted signs that they'd be opening a new outpost in the former Birdbath space. (Those plans obviously never materialized.)

As for H Mart, this will be the third location in Manhattan (the others are on West 32nd Street and Broadway on the Upper West Side). Overall H Mart has more than 70 outposts in the United States and Canada.

I'm familiar with the store, though I've never been inside one... if anyone wants to chime in about H Mart in the comments.
